Hi Warren,

Yes current space-craft are very vulnerable to "space-junk" &
meteors/comets. Someone must be charting the ISS course all the time so it
"flys" out of the path of known "junk".

Until we can build space-craft in space itself (if ever, since it is
difficult) with armoured hulls like "ice-breaker ships", they are fairly
light in construction because of limitations in the launching mass (from
the ground on earth). So flying in the ISS & shuttle must be a "calculated
risk" of something hitting the craft & doing major harm.

So far I have seen pictures of "scratched" windows on the shuttle from
micro object impacts.

Pictures of the Moon show many craters from impacts. There are some big
craters in the Australian outback. Other "spashdowns" must have happened
in earth's oceans. Fortunately most objects are small enough to burn up to
be a relatively small size & not be a problem for the living things on
earth.
I have read that it is fortunate that we have big planets like jupiter &
saturn to "attract" most of the solar junk & to "clean up" the solar
system so it is safer for us to live in.

I forget what the current theory is for the eradication of the world's
Dinosaurs. A global winter from a comet impact was once favoured.
