GB2RS NEWS

Sunday 20th September 2009

The news headlines

RSGB members doing their bit for international amateur radio
Amateur operation on Trafalgar Square Plinth
Latest schedule for GB2CW transmissions available

Volunteers are the life-blood of the RSGB, and very often their quiet
work in the background can be extremely influential. Recently, RSGB HF
Manager and Region 1 LF Coordinator John Gould, G3WKL and RSGB President
Colin Thomas, G3PSM attended the CEPT preparation programme for WRC-12.
Now, former RSGB President Peter Chadwick, G3RZP is in Geneva to
represent the IARU at ITU Working Parties 1A, B and C and at the Study
Group 1 meeting. The RSGB would like to thank these gentlemen, and the
many hundreds of other volunteers who give up their time freely for the
benefit of our shared hobby.

[Note to newsreaders: there is no significance to the capital letters in
the web address at the end of this item: they are just to make it easier
and more obvious for you to read]

You may be aware that the fourth plinth in Trafalgar Square is currently
being occupied by members of the public, one hour at a time, as part of
the One And Other art project. On Friday 25 September, between 4 and
5pm, the plinth will be occupied by Martin Maynard, G8CIX. He will be
demonstrating amateur radio and, for one hour, operating the special
event station GB1AO. This will doubtless become one of the rarest
callsigns ever. Martin is being supported in his endeavours by Icom UK,
who have generously loaned equipment for the event. If you can't make it
to Trafalgar Square yourself you can watch proceedings live on Sky Arts
or on the web stream at www.OneAndOther.co.uk. Martin's own web site is
www.GB1AO.co.uk.

Listeners interested in GB2CW transmissions can obtain the latest
broadcast schedule on the RSGB website. It can be found within the
"Options" drop-down menu of the "Morse Code: Certificate of Competency"
section of the site. Inserting "GB2CW Broadcast Schedule" into Google
will also provide a link to the RSGB site. However, any search will also
provide a link to www.geocities.com/gm0rse/gb2cw.htm. This site should
be ignored: it is not the responsibility of the RSGB and contains out of
date information.

The British Young Ladies Amateur Radio Association will be celebrating
its 30th anniversary on their stand at the National Hamfest in Newark on
2 and 3 October. They invite all radio amateurs to join them in their
celebrations and look forward to meeting as many amateurs as possible -
whether BYLARA members or not. For more information on how to get to the
venue to join in these birthday celebrations, go to www.nationalhamfest.c
o.uk.

RAOTA, the Radio Amateur Old Timers Association, will be holding its
2009 AGM on Saturday 26 September at 1pm at The Horns of Boningale,
Holyhead Road, Boningale, Albrighton, approximately 4 miles east of RAF
Cosford. All RAOTA members are welcome. The RAF Cosford museum will be
open from 10am, entry is free and members are invited to visit this
prior to the AGM.

GB7NB is now operational one and a half miles south of Norwich in
Norfolk. It transmits on 439.6875MHz with a -9MHz shift. A Gateway
connection is planned for the near future. The group would like to thank
all who assisted with the project including Darren, G7LWT from the
D-Star UK-IT team and the Cambridge Repeater Group. More information can
be found at the Norfolk Repeater Group's web page www.gb3nb.org.uk or
www.gb7nb.org.uk.

Tomorrow, Monday 21 September, is the last day that pre-booked discount
tickets are available for the National Hamfest organised by the RSGB in
association with the Lincoln Short Wave Club. Taking place on 2 and 3
October, discounted pre-booked tickets are £3.50 although accompanied
under 16s go free. The brand new 2010 Yearbook will be available from
the RSGB at the show and the first 100 customers each day purchasing a
Yearbook will receive a free goody bag.

In April 2008, Ray Oliver, G3NDS set sail in his yacht Christine Marie
on a two year sail around the UK in support of charities. He is due to
arrive home on 18 September. During his cruise he was in regular radio
contact with hundreds of licensed radio amateurs who followed and
supported him as he progressed around the coast. When half way across
the Celtic Sea and out of contact with both the Irish and UK coastguard
VHF stations he says it was reassuring to make strong clear radio
communication with five radio amateurs in the UK on 80m SSB. For the
latest information on his homecoming, or details of the trip, look at
his website www.roundukcruise.org.uk.

Angel of the North Amateur Radio Club now has five candidates on their
Foundation Course that started last week, but there is still time to
join. The course continues from 10am to 5pm on Saturdays at Whitehall
Road Methodist Church Hall. The examination will be at 7.30pm on Monday
5 October. Contact 07990 760920 if you are interested in joining.

The HB9AFO SwissCube web page reports that ham radio satellite may be
launched on 21 September. SwissCube is one of four amateur radio
satellites that will be launched from India on a PSL-VC14 booster. More
information is online at tinyurl.com/SwissCube.

Now the solar factual data for the period from the 7th to the 13th of
September, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS on the 14th of September.

The solar disc was spotless everyday and solar activity was a very low
levels. Solar flux levels remained at 69 units everyday. The 90 day
solar flux average on the 13th was 68 units, that's one unit up on last
week. X-ray flux levels were below the minimum reporting level everyday.
Geomagnetic activity was quiet everyday with the Ap index as low as 1
unit on the 9th and up to 6 on the 13th. The average was Ap 3 units.
Solar wind data from the ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase
from a slow 290 kilometres per second on the 9th to 380 by the 13th.
Particle densities were low everyday, however, on the 13th they increase
to 10 particles per cubic centimetre. As expected with a quiet
geomagnetic field the Bz showed little variation, only on the 13th did
fluctuations of up to minus and plus 8 nanoTeslas take place.

And finally the solar forecast. Solar activity is expected to continue
at very low levels. The solar disc is also expected to be spotless most
days. Without any sunspot activity, solar flux levels should be in the
high 60's. Geomagnetic activity is expected to be at quiet levels until
Friday or Saturday when a small recurring coronal hole disturbance is
expected to arrive. The disturbance should last for about 24 hours. MUFs
during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around 19MHz for the
south and 16MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows should be about
9MHz. Paths this week to South America should have a maximum usable
frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of around 25MHz. The optimum
working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be about 20MHz.
The best time to try this path will be between 1200 and 1900 hours UTC.

And that's all for this week from the propagation team.
