The committee of the club would like to congratulate two of our members that were issued with their licence and call signs on Thursday 27/08/2009.
Steven Lloyd VK7FXXX and James [Hamish] Carnegie VK7FHAM are two new "F" calls that you will no doubt be hearing soon on our local North West repeaters and on the HF bands if ever this rain stops to enable them to get some wire and aluminium in the air.
So, if you hear these gents come up on air soon, give them a shout and welcome them to our hobby.

Southern News
Radio and Electronics Association of Southern Tasmania
World Moon Bounce Day Presentation
REAST's September Presentation will be about the World Moon Bounce Day activities.
On 27 June 2009 a group of Southern VK7 amateurs were involved in the first of the Echoes of Apollo celebration of the 40th Anniversary of the first moon walk with World Moon Bounce Day.
This day saw many amateurs around the world bouncing both side band and digital mode signals off the moon.
The University of Tasmania through Dr Jim Lovell agreed for a group of radio amateurs to use their 26m Radio Telescope at Mt Pleasant for the World Moon Bounce activity.
Keen digital EME'er Rex VK7MO lead the day assisted by Justin VK7TW and Radio Telescope Technician Eric VK7BB who made an invaluable contribution to making the day a success.
Many contacts were made throughout the day and these were recorded on video and have been cut into two presentations - a humorous look at talking to the moon by Paul VK7FPAH and the second is a record of all the key events throughout the day by Justin VK7TW.
Both these presentation will be shown on the big screen and take a total of just over an hour.
See you at the Queen's Domain clubrooms and it starts at 8pm.

REAST ATV Experimenters Night
Last Wednesday night saw another great roll-up with some great video presentations.
We started with some show and tell from Justin VK7TW on microwave resources and specifically the microwave antenna manual from W1GHZ. This manual is freely available and covers many microwave antennas with both theory and practice. There is also freely available software that allows you to design and experiment with dish and feed designs. Justin took the ATV audience through the design of a 10GHz horn for a standard WR90 wave guide.
Then we presented a great video from Warren VK7FEET which was titled Princess Elisabeth Antarctica Aiming for Zero Emission from Belgium. The video takes the audience through some of the history of bases on Antarctica with a focus on the Belgium base and then the recent rebuilding of zero emission base. The video is from the International Polar Foundation.
The second presentation was from our friends at Honeysuckle Creek Tracking station alumni and was the progress made on the restoration of the Apollo 11 video of the EVAs and there is an appreciable increase in definition and contrast. This DVD is a work in progress and the restoration work will be completed by the end of September 2009 so, Justin hopes to get a copy of the fully restored videos for a future ATV night.
Next week is a REAST presentation night so the ATV nights will get back underway in a fortnight – see you then.

Deep South Satellite DX
Antarctica - KC4USV McMurdo Station
Bill Erhardt lets us know via the AMSAT-VK mailing list that he will be making his second summer season to McMurdo Station Antarctica in Nov 2009 - Feb 2010 and he will be taking an Arrow II antenna and his TH-7(g) Kenwood for FM satellites.
Another ham is bringing a 2m and 70 cm all mode for SSB/CW birds. Bill expects to be active on a couple birds when he is not busy working.
Sunday is my normal day off so he will try to work as many birds on that day.
Hope to hear some VK and ZL calls on the birds from Antarctica.
Cheers from Montana and Bill Erhardt KC4USV
Soon to be on McMurdo Station Antarctica.

Satellite News
SuitSat-2 Gets A New Name
The SuitSat-2 project now has a new name to go with its new shape, ARISSat-1.
Gaston Bertels, ON4WF, the ARISS Chairman announced the new name for the satellite and project this week. The project team is moving ahead using the same hardware that was to fly in the Russian Orlan suit. The team is re-configuring some of the modules to fit into the new structure being designed by Bob Davis, KF4KSS and his team.
Wallops Suborbital Launch With APRS
There will be a launch to 300+ km of an APRS payload on a sounding rocket out of Wallops Island VA - USA, this fall. Bob Bruninga, WB4APR, says, "I don't want to steal anyone's thunder, but they said I could give this heads up".
More details will be posted when available.
It is only 300 milliiwatts and will be on the National APRS frequency 144.39 to make sure everyone can track it. The total mission duration is on the order of 10 minutes from launch to re-entry.
AMSAT stations with beams in the mid-Atlantic states will be valuable.
APRS stations with Igates with beams will be even better so the student builders half way across the country can get their packets live via the APRS-IS (internet)...
OMNI antennas in quiet locations should be able to hear the packets direct, so nearby Igates with omni's probably need no enhancement.

History News
The AIR WOP's Job - 1944 - 101 Squadron
The following story was written by John G0LYY and is sourced from the FIST UK Magazine for June 2009 and give a fascinating insight into the day-to-day life of air crew during WWII.
The first duty of the day was to collect a small fully charged accumulator from the Acc Section. You took this out to your "kite" for the DI (Daily Inspection). It could be a good mile, but most of us had bikes.
First job was to change the intercom batteries,. Then you checked the crew's helmets for intercom. Then you checked all the intercom points. There were a lot of these, not only at crew positions.
Then you checked your own equipment, the dear old 1154/1155. I must say I liked using this. My first experience of air operating was with the old 1082/1083. This was rather crude in comparison. The receiver was TRF, with reaction, and was tuned by reference to calibrations.
To change bands on the TX, you juggled around with a collection of bulky plug in coils.
Checking the 1154 included making a brief call to the Base station. For security reasons we did not use the squadron call sign, which was changed every trip. As our regular kite was E Easy I would call on the key "T8Q v E". It always amused me to send and receive that lonely dot. Towards the end we used de instead of v, in line with the Americans.
We also used their phonetic alphabet. In the early war years we were still using the same phonetics as in WW1 - Ack, Beer, Charlie, Don, etc. This included Monkey, Nuts, Orange, Pip, and of course F Freddie, made famous by the film "Target for Tonight". We were not allowed to forget the American phonetics. Except on mornings after night ops we were woken by the Tannoy announcing in stentorian tones, "The phonetic alphabet at present in use is as follows: - A Able, B Baker, C Charlie, etc." Now we have a different one again, and the odd thing is that I remember those old ones better than the current one.!
Going back to those brief calls, they were made every day, so that there was no sudden_ outburst of calls to inform the enemy that a raid was on. From this point radio silence was the order of the day. In the early war film "Target for Tonight" there was no end of chat between Base and all the aircraft taking part, which was a complete give away that something was on. We were very naïve in those early days. In 1944 messages from the control tower were sent by Aldis lamp If it was anything, it was usually "Scrubbed!" though even that was usually indicated by firing off a rocket. Once it was, "Take off put back one hour"!
By the time we had finished our DIs we usually knew whether there was anything on, or "Stand down". If the latter, that was our work for the day. Some said we had an easy war. So it was - if we got back!
