Intersting as it looks like Ofcom is doing the right thing here.

I haven't seen Ian post his question to Ofcom so we can only guess what he
asked them. But it looks like Ofcom will only release the sanitised data to
"book publishers". This is exactly correct. The data was gathered by RA and
Ofcom and the application forms for a license ask you what info you wish
to release. i.e. your name and address or if you wish to be details witheld.

Ofcom cannot go and release personally identifiable information to anyone
else if the providers of that info had asked for it to be witheld. Ofcom
would need the permission of everyone who has requested their details be
held back before they could release it. Those who have already consented
for call books to hold their data probably dont need to reconsent.

The fact which a lot of people overlook is that the info belongs to me. The
only people who need to know it are the licensing body. Nobody else needs
to know, it's my info not yours. You have no right to know. This fact
is ignored by many who collate data for financial gain. c.f. 118800.co.uk and
their mobile phone directory in the UK.

Now if Ofcom wish to seek consent to release this info they can do. It can
be added to the online licensing system. As everyone confirms the details they
can consent or not to release of the info to anyone. You'll just have to wait
till 2012 till everyone needs to confirm their details again before you'll
have a DPA clean database to release.

I've already received dodgy marketing pish that can only have come from the
RSGB membership list. They claim they didn't release it, I know I didn't
release it but someone did.

You can ask why do I care so much about my details. The answer is simple.
THEY'RE MY DETAILS.
