It seems sadly, that there are very few full users of Packet in VK2?
As far s I can ascertain, there maybe only two, who do a full daily
download of bulletins. About 3 others seem to look at a few recent bulls
or just use their BBS to send personal mail. Just scan the bull list and
see how very few emanate from VK!
I feel something needs to be done to make packet more popular, as it
is the only real Amateur Radio forum we have.
Gone are the days of multiple available Radio Digi's, so that the few
remaining users are mostly Telnetting. In fact apart from VK2KGZ, I cannot
find anyone else in the Sydney area of VK2 using a wireless connect to
keep up with all bulls to last listed. That found by doing several daily
JKs on 4 BBS's, in the Sydney area.
Personally I have been on packet, almost since its inception in VK and
using Winpac when that came along, auto downloading all headers, every day
of the week! Whew and on more than one BBS to give them some more use,
other than forwarding!
There are a couple who use HF, but I feel Telnet is now in
predominance and BBS's that have telnet, might consider advertising its
use rather than decrying. Maybe actively seeking users and making open
their BBS's, with no necessity for requesting Winpac use and able to set
their own logon. I think Telnet is the ONLY way forward now particularly
on a speed basis!
There are at least two VK BBS,s that are open, as we have on internet
sites all over and the younger generation are familiar with that, Perhaps
some finding Packet a bit old fashion and RF slow, whilst I know of a few
who gave it away because of all that.
One BBS was worried re security, but that I feel that has no real impact
or worry and if a nuisance crept in he could be put on reject?
What I am feeling is, that packet radio will crumble to a dead stop in
VK, if it is not made more public and easily accessible. It seems every
week a BBS closes and others advise of no users.
I would like to see responders to this bulletin particularly VK
BBS's, advise of their full time daily user numbers please, so we can
jointly access the situation.
