GB2RS NEWS
Sunday 10 February
The news headlines
• More time and power for 500kHz enthusiasts
• Spectrum Forum web site has moved
• New amateur antennas in space
There is good news this week for those experimenting on the MF band 501
to 504kHz. Following representations made by the RSGB, OfCom have
extended the validity of all Notices of Variation by one year to 28
February 2009. At the same time the maximum permitted power has also
been increased to 1W ERP from 100mW ERP. The full statement from Ofcom,
including details of how to apply for a Notice of Variation, can be
found on the Ofcom web site.
--------------------------
The Spectrum Forum web site has been moved. It is now contained within
the main RSGB website. The Spectrum Forum site contains information,
news and some archive matter on amateur spectrum management matters.
Material includes band plans, award programmes, the DXpedition Fund and
many
other items. The new address is www.rsgb.org/spectrumforum/. For the
time being links are being put on some old pages to the new site. We
recommend you ensure that you update any browser bookmarks as soon as
possible.
---------------------------
Amateur radio in space received a boost in the early hours of Friday 8
February when Space Shuttle Atlantis delivered the Columbus module into
orbit. Columbus carries 23cm and 13cm antennas which will soon be
used to enhance the onboard amateur radio station. This successful
expansion of capabilities is the result of over five years of hard work
by the ARISS Europe team. For more information on the antennas and how
they will be used, go to www.ariss-eu.org.
---------------------------
The weekend of 16 and 17 February sees the annual Guiding radio event
Thinking Day on the Air. Many special event and club callsigns will be
aired during that weekend. These include GB4FGN at Green's Windmill in
Nottingham; GB0CDG in Congresbury, Somerset; GB0EYG, East Yorkshire
Guides; GB0SWG, South Woodham Ferrers, GB1GG in Scarborough; GB4ALV at
HMS Collingwood and GB8BG at Beaconsfield. Further details of Thinking
Day on the Air can be found on the web at www.guides-on-theair.co.uk.
--------------------------
Peter Thulesen, OX3XR, is looking for contacts on 5MHz which is newly
available in Greenland. He is licensed to use the same seven spot
frequencies used in the UK. He has listened daily on 5MHz but has not
yet heard any UK activity. Stations in the North of the UK might just
manage contacts with him using CW during daylight, but contacts are
likely to be more successful in the evening once both the UK and
Greenland are in darkness. He is keen to work UK stations on 5MHz and if
you wish to make a schedule with him, Peter can be emailed at
ox3xr@greennet.gl.
--------------------------
The Shefford and District Amateur Radio Society are celebrating their
60th anniversary year in 2008/9 and invite past members to contact the
Secretary David Lloyd, G8UOD, with their memories and photographs
from the early years. Phone David on 01234 742757 or email him at
davide.lloyd@ntlworld.com.
--------------------------
Organisers of ‘SOS Radio Week', held during January have asked us to
thank the many radio amateurs who had contacts with participating
stations. These stations were sponsored and were raising money for the
RNLI so every contact was valuable. The fund-raising stations themselves
are also thanked. Details of how these stations should submit their
sponsorship money can be found at www.sadarc.org.uk. Individuals can
also
make a direct donation to SOS Radio Week via this web site.
--------------------------
A Deputy Regional Manager is required for District 135, Lincolnshire.
Any Lincolnshire-based RSGB member with a few hours to spare could
become part of this successful team. Please contact Region 13 Regional
Manager Jim Stevenson, G0EJQ, on 012522-806935 for more information.
--------------------------
We regret to announce that we gave the wrong contact details for week’s
item about Churches and Chapels On The Air. The correct email address
for further information is g3xyf@btconnect.com.
--------------------------

-------------------------
Now for the news of special events
As part of Antarctic Week 2008, GB0ANT will be on the air to raise
awareness of Global Warming and Climate Change issues. The station will
run from 11 to 29 February and has a reference number of WAP-072
for the International Polar Year award. Further information can be found
at www.charlesm0oxo.piczo.com.
GB0WW will be active during February from near Weedon in
Northamptonshire The site is the location of the memorial to the birth
of radar. This was invented on 26 February 1935 by Robert Watson Watt
and Arnold Wilkins.
GB0RDF will also operate from Borough Hill in Daventry where radar
experiments were carried out.
-------------------------
And now the HF DX news compiled from 425 DX News, the Ohio-Penn DX
Bulletin and other sources.
This week’s major DXpedition is VP6DX on Ducie Island, part of the
Pacific islands of Pitcairn. The team have travelled to the area and
expect to start operating this week. They will stay for about two weeks,
depending on weather conditions. This will include operation on the ARRL
CW Contest. All bands will be used from 160 to 6 metres, using SSB and
CW, with RTTY on 30 and 20 metres. There is much more information on the
web at ducie2008.dl1mgb.com.
TI9K is a large expedition to Isla de Coco which is expected to run
until 14 February. Six or seven stations should be on the air for 24
hours a day on all HF bands, plus 60 metres and 6 metres. Modes are SSB,
CW,
RTTY and PSK31. Full details can be found on the Internet at
www.ti9.eu.com.
---------------------------
Now the contest news
The CQ Worldwide RTTY WPX Contest ends at 2359UTC on Sunday 10 February.
The bands from 3.5 to 28MHz may be used and the exchange is RST and
serial number.
On Sunday 10 February a session of the RSGB 70MHz Cumulatives take place
from 1000 to 1200UTC. All modes are permitted and the exchange is RST,
serial number and locator.
On Tuesday 12 February, there is the RSGB 432MHz Activity Contest
between 2000 and 2230UTC. All modes are permitted and the exchange is
RST, serial number and locator.
Wednesday 13 February sees the RSGB 80 metre Club Championship. This is
a data modes event held between 2000 and 2130UTC. The exchange is RST
and serial number.
Over the weekend 16 and 17 February, the ARRL DX CW Contest takes place,
starting at 0000UTC on the Saturday and ending at 2359 on Sunday. All
bands are used between topband and 10 metres, and the exchange is RST
and power in watts.
---------------------------
And now the solar factual data for the period from 28 January to the 3
February, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS.
The solar disc was spotless on the 28th, but on the 29th a small sunspot
group appeared bringing to an end a 20 day period when the Sun was
spotless. Solar activity was very low. Solar flux levels increased
slightly from 71 units to 73, and the average was 72 units. The 90 day
solar flux average on the 3rd was 75 units, that’s one unit up on last
week. X-ray flux levels remained below the minimum level throughout.
Geomagnetic activity started at quiet levels with an Ap index of only 2
units on the 28th and the 30th.
However, as forecast a recurring coronal hole disturbance started during
the evening of the 1st. The most disturbed day was the 2nd when the Ap
was 19 units. The average was Ap 9 units. The ACE spacecraft saw solar
wind speeds increase from 310 to 710 kilometres per second by the 2nd.
Particle densities were low except on the 31st when they increased to 35
particles per cubic centimetre. Bz varied between minus 3 and plus 4
nanoTeslas on the quiet days and between minus 10 and plus 9 nanoTeslas
during the disturbance.
HF conditions remained relatively good until the geomagnetic disturbance
lowered MUFs, particularly over high-latitude paths. Even so, there were
good openings on 14MHz to the Far East in the mornings and the West
Coast of North America in the afternoons. VK was workable on frequencies
as high as 21MHz. There was little or no DX on 28MHz, but openings to
continental Europe were reported on several days. There was auroral
propagation on 50 and 144MHz on the evening of the 1st, but it appears
to have been restricted to high latitudes.
And finally the solar forecast. The quiet side of the Sun is expected to
be looking our way this week. The solar disc could be spotless on some
days. Solar activity is expected to be very low. Solar flux levels
should
decline and be around the 70 mark later in the week. The geomagnetic
field is expected to be at active levels until after midweek. This is in
response to a recurring coronal hole. Quiet conditions should prevail
over next weekend. MUFs during daylight hours at equal latitudes should
be around 18MHz for the south and 15MHz for the north. The darkness hour
lows should be around 7MHz. Paths this week to the Middle East should
have a maximum usable frequency with a 50 per cent success rate of about
20MHz. The optimum working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate
should be around 16MHz. The best time to try this path will be
between 0900 and 1500 hours UTC.
And that’s all for this week from the propagation team.
