The new D-Star system offers the capability of sending text messages from
handheld to handheld in near-real time, just as cellphones do.

I'll be sorry to see the end of packet, which (unlike most internet groups)
has always been non-specific in topic, and therefore of broader appeal.

Using packet since 1995, I quickly learned an enormous amount about data
handling (everything from ASCII code to RS-232 pinouts to AX.25 protocol).

In recent years I've even taught myself BASIC and Assembler in order to
write my own APRS beaconing and data handling programs.  This led into the
programming of microprocessors.  So for me, packet has been a very useful
training environment.
