NORTHERN NEWS
Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club
For anyone wanting to get some more squid poles via a purchase through NTARC,
you'll have to wait for a little while.
So popular have they been that we managed to run the manufacturer dry of
fibreglass! We will let you know when more arrive.
Now, for those of you who have your squid pole, what can you do with it?
Well Al VK7AN plans a bit of an antenna construction day where proud squid
pole owners can get together, assemble their antennae and test them in a
group setting. Watch this space for more detail!
The next meeting on Wednesday 8th of April at Alanvale Polytechnic will have
a mystery guest speaker.
Now normally this means that Al VK7AN hasn't a clue who he'll ask to do
a presentation
but we do have someone lined up to do a technical talk on
a communications related subject, we promise hihi.

Special AGM Presentation
In memory of Matt Whayman VK7MAT SK.
Back before Christmas, Matt Whayman's (VK7MAT SK) Mum, Carol approached
Brian Welch VK7BW with a new-still in original package 10-15m beam that Matt
never got the chance to put up prior to his untimely death in an accident
on the Midlands Highway on 26 March 1999.
After much consideration about recent licensees the REAST Assessors and
Learning Facilitators agreed that it be presented to Thomas Karpiniec VK7NML
as a gift in memory of Matt Whayman.
Thomas is a struggling uni student studying electrical/electronic engineering
and is deeply involved in the club and promotion of the hobby of amateur radio.
He was recently involved with organising of the National Linux conference
at UTAS and got together a group of amateurs from all over Australia during
the conference.
He served as a member of the REAST Committee in 2008 and stepped down
last weekend due to his studies.
He is a great ambassador for the hobby and has thrown himself into JOTA
in the last two years manning the Brighton and Howrah Guides and is very
involved with the ATV nights.
Congratulations to Thomas.
(Justin, VK7TW)

ATV Experimenters Night
Last week at our ATV Experimenter's night we played some more episodes of
the Secret Life of Machines covering the fax, lifts and word processor's.
We went out on both analog 70cm and digital 23cm ATV from the domain with
reports from Steve VK7OO, Tom VK7TL and Paul VK7FPAH on both 70cm and 23cm.
We played with the locations of the digital transmitter and antenna
polarisation with some mixed results.
We intend to mount the semi-permanent 23cm omnidirectional transmit
antenna on the ATV tower for field testing thanks to Anders VK7FAJM.
We are measuring up for a proposal to swap the ATV studio with the workshop
section of the garage and we measured up during the night to play with
the arrangement.
This move will provide more room and reduce the noise from the repeater
racks and enable the ATV group to fully utilise much of the equipment that
has been donated to the group.
See you there this Wednesday night around 7:30pm at the Queens Domain
clubrooms.
How do you receive ATV on an ATV night well, ATV goes out on 444.25MHz
(Channel 16) just below SBS on the UHF TV Band. You will need an antenna
with some gain pointed toward the Domain to receive our signal so,
why not try tuning down the low end of the UHF TV band and give us a
call on what you are seeing and hearing.
See you there.

SPACE NEWS
Great Fly-Bys in Last Week
With the trip of the Space Shuttle Discovery up to the ISS for it's two
week construction trip, Space Weather & NASA News has reported that there
has been some great chances to see a rare double flyby as the Shuttle
docked and then undocks in a fortnight's time.
These opportunities are greatest at both sunrise and sunset as the ISS
passes over the horizon.
For orbit details take a look at the web address on the email and internet
editions of this broadcast.

BPL News
Recognition BPL don't cut the mustard
Finally, the telecomms industry is admitting that Broadband over powerline
(BPL) has a multiplicity of issues in deployment.
According to the 13 March 2009 issue of US industry journal Network World,
it is now recognised that BPL doesn't really cut the mustard against
alternative internet delivery technologies in underserved rural areas.
Here's the summary:
1) BPL networks have to be run jointly by an ISP and an electricity
utility; neither knows each other's business.
2) BPL is actually yet to be demonstrated working in a widespread
deployment; a number of high-profile plans and installation trials
over recent years have fallen through.
3) BPL has technological issues ranging from interference ingress and
egress, power line noise and multiplexing problem.
Check out the full article at the web address in the email and internet
editions of this broadcast.
