As part of the event,
there will be a Bargain Boot Bonanza where you are almost certain to pick

electronics and computer equipment for sale on the day.
Amongst these treasures will be such things as: antennas, commercial hand
held radios, computer network routers, extension speakers, transceivers and
receivers of all descriptions including HF and VHF. FM and all mode,
commercial test gear, digital cameras, SWR meters, and much much more.
As in every sale of this kind there will be bargains that you are sure to
hear about afterwards and spent the rest of the week kicking yourself that
you missed out on. Don't miss out...See you at the MTV/SS BBQ and Bargain
Boot Bonanza."
Look forward to seeing you there.

NORTH WEST News
North West Tasmanian Amateur Radio Interest Group
Don't forget tomorrow - 9th March at Legion Park Ulverstone around 11AM
when NWTARIG is having a BBQ. The park is entered from West Ulverstone
via Maud or Alice St. Turn toward the river to find us. If all else fails
call in and say "I'm lost". BYO food and drink.
Phil VK7JJ will be coming to have a sausage or two but more important
to share his expertise on squid pole antennas. This promises to be a great
learning experience and David VK7ZDJ will provide a whiteboard so we can
see as well as hear.
The social morning at the Two Oaks Cafe Somerset was a great success with
10 members and several new faces. Great food and drink and a social
occasion enjoyed by all.
The next general meeting is on March 28th, at 2pm. the week after the Meet
the Voice weekend at Ross. We will be at our new venue, Lions Meeting rooms
corner of Ironcliffe Rd and King Edward St Penguin.
For those who know the place this is the old council chambers.
Ample off road parking available and a cuppa before, during or after will
be available.
(73 Anne VK7BYL President NWTARIG)
At a committee meeting held on Wednesday the 25th of February 2009 the
following resolution was passed. "The Management Committee would be standing
down at the next General Club Meeting so that new elections can be held,
enabling only financial members to vote."
The committee agreed that this would be the honourable thing to do in the
light of a complaint received from one of the Club Members who claimed that
the members who had submitted their resignations on the day of the AGM had
no right to vote at the AGM.
Further details will be made available to members at the next meeting.

NORTHERN NEWS
Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club
Sometimes it can be a little hard to keep track of who is who in a club.
Have you ever wondered who you would see if you wanted to introduce a
newcomer to the hobby to do their Foundation licence?
Or maybe you want to query your membership status with the treasurer?
Well wonder no more we thought it might be a good idea to go over our
office bearers within NTARC:
President and leader extraordinaire: Al Burke VK7AN
Vice President: Bill Maxwell VK7MX
Doesn't-he-look-pretty-in-a-dress Secretary: Jason Reilly VK7ZJA
Treasurer: Ann Eagling VK7FYBG
Repeater Officer: "tireless" Joe Gelston VK7JG and ably assisted by
Tony VK7YBG
Examination and Education Officer: Peter Dowde VK7PD
And our new QSL and passionate BPL Officer is Norm Deitch VK7AC.
The next NTARC meeting is at Hollybank with an open fire (or BYO gas) BBQ,
starting at 5.30pm this Wednesday the 11th of March
come and enjoy
the lovely autumn evening and some great company.
For those of you who have been busy building squid poles, this would be the
perfect opportunity to field-test them in a nice open area and low noise
location.
Speaking of the squid poles, NTARC still has some left over for $40 each.
For those who don't know, they're 9 metres long, lightweight telescopic
fibreglass poles that compact down to a tube about a metre long, and they're
perfect as a starting point for a great HF multiband antenna.
Interested? Get in touch with Ann VK7FYBG or Jason VK7ZJA.

Thanks from

Southern News
Sorell Men's Shed On the Air
Over the last few weeks we have heard VK7SMS on the air calling in the
broadcast callbacks. SMS standing for Sorell Men's Shed.
This is the recently registered callsign of the Sorell Men's Shed and Heritage
Museum Community Project
This is the brain-child of Ken Sulman VK7DY and by all account has been and
is a roaring success.
The common theme in all Sheds is about men feeling useful and contributing
again to their communities, learning or sharing their skills and making friends.
If you are in the vicinity of Sorell head straight across the main
intersection, turn left past the old Railway Station and keep going down
through the gates to where it all happens.
Ken will more than likely be about and willing to show you all the things
they get up to.
Take a look at their website that can be found on the email and internet
editions of this broadcast.

Radio and Electronics Association of Southern Tasmania
Elevation Device Found!
Thanks to Harvey VK7HK for his donation of a first class elevation device
otherwise known as a ladder to REAST.
It's on a "borrow back basis" if he needs it. It's at the club in the back
shed room on top of the shelving if you need it for adjusting, maintaining
or installing antennas and other things around the clubrooms.
A big thank you to Harvey.
(Dave, VK7DM)

Education and Training
Congratulation and apologies to Tony VK7FACC in last week's broadcast,
I got his last name wrong.
Congratulation again to all and we look forward to hearing you on air with
your new callsigns.
If you would like to participate in a future training and/or assessment and
the assessment could be for any licence (foundation, standard, advanced or
practical) then let Reg VK7KK know on mobile: 0417 391 607 or

REAST AGM & Membership Reminder
Next week is the Association's annual general meeting which will be held on
Sunday 15th March at 10:30am at the REAST clubrooms following the broadcast.
Please note all positions are up for nomination so, please think about whom
you would like to nominate for any positions on the committee, or if you
would like to be nominated. Nomination forms are available on the REAST website.
After the AGM there will be a BYO barbecue lunch.
Subscriptions are due and will be accepted prior to the AGM.
This year if you are paying your subscription by direct deposit your receipt
number and transfer description must be written on your renewal form so that
payments can be easily identified. A new renewal form is available on the
REAST website and at the clubrooms that includes all the information required.
Furthermore, many members have changed their call signs in the last year with
the two letter call sign ballot and for other reasons so if your call sign has
changed in the last year please make sure this is clearly marked on your
renewal form.

ATV Experimenters Night
This week we get back underway with the ATV Experimenter's nights.
We will be playing the lastest AmateurLogic.TV episode 23 from the guys
in the deep South of the US. They cover a good range of subjects.
We will have a range of 1283MHz directional antennas and will be
transmitting the program again from both analog 70cm and digital 23cm.
Please note that the listing of the ATV Experimenter's videos is now
available on the REAST members page.
http://reast.asn.au/members/
We get back under way on Wednesday March 11th around 7:30pm.
How do you receive ATV on an ATV night well, ATV goes out on 444.25MHz
(Channel 16) just below SBS on the UHF TV Band.
You will need an antenna with some gain pointed toward the Domain to
receive our signal so, why not try tuning down the low end of the UHF
TV band and give us a call on what you are seeing and hearing.
See you there.

Paranoia/Humour News
Mistaken Antenna Identity!
Steve VK7OO passed on a link to an American News station KPTM Fox 42 in
Omaha Nebraska which reported that police had detonated a ham radio
antenna thinking it was a pipe bomb.
Police evacuated a midtown neighbourhood briefly on the morning of Thursday
26th February for what was originally thought to be a bomb, but in the end,
it turned out to be ham radio equipment.
The house caught fire last week and a cleaning company whilst cleaning up
found the equipment and called police, thinking it was a pipe bomb.
Police were called, and officers detonated the equipment.
The neighbourhood was evacuated during the investigation.
There is a 2m video available of the incident available on the email and
internet editions of this broadcast.

Satellite DXPEDITION News
Very Gentle DX-Pedition to the South Atlantic
Graham, G3VZV/MM lets us know that commencing March 7th 2009, I will be
onboard MV Minerva which is visiting the islands lying off Antarctica.
The schedule includes visits to South Georgia (VP8) on March 12 & 13th
and Tristan da Cunha (ZD9) on March 18 &19th before arriving in Cape Town
on March 24th.
Activity is planned via SO50, AO51 and the ISS (if available) from the
ship and, if licences can be obtained, from the islands themselves.
I intend to take FM handhelds and an Arrow antenna and hope to have at
least some limited internet access which can be used to arrange skeds.

History News
Did You Know?
In 1843 Georg Ohm's proposed his "acoustic law".
Yes this is the same Georg Ohm who came up with the law that governs
most electrical and electronic devices.
Ohm's acoustic law is sometimes called the acoustic phase law and states
that a musical sound is perceived by the ear as a set of a number of
constituent pure harmonic tones.
Hermann von Helmholtz elaborated the law into what is often today known
as Ohm's acoustic law, by adding that the quality of a tone depends
solely on the number and relative strength of its partial simple tones,
and not on their relative phases.
Helmholtz championed the law in opposition to contrary evidence expounded
by August Seebeck.
The law has also been interpreted as "a pitch corresponding to a certain
frequency can only be heard if the acoustical wave contains power at that
frequency."
These laws are known to be not quite true. In modern times, the sensitivity
of human hearing to the phase of tone components has been extensively
investigated. Limitations have led to the following characterization:
For years musicians have been told that the ear is able to separate any
complex signal into a series of sinusoidal signals that is acts as a
Fourier analyzer. This quarter-truth, known as Ohm's Other Law, has served
to increase the distrust with which perceptive musicians regard scientists,
since it is readily apparent to them that the ear acts in this way only
under very restricted conditions.
