Hi All,
The VK3API BBS has been off air for about 10 days, but only indirectly
because of the fires.
I was out of the country and the mains power supply went off due to the
power supply problems caused by the bush fires (wildfires to the USA
readers)
The nearest the fire came to my QTH was about 10km away, probably only a
few minutes in firestorm parlance but the wind took it away from my house.
To my knowledge at this time, no local amateurs have perished however
several have lost their houses and all their possessions. At least one
club member is still under threat from the continuing fires and there may
be others.
The death toll according to tonight's television news is 201 but is not
expected to rise much more from deaths on the bush fire day, however many
people are still in a critical condition in hospital and some are not
expected to survive.
Also according to tonight's television news a second man has been charged
with arson, however his seems to be more a case of stupidity that
deliberate intent. He accidentally started a fire by not butting out a
cigarette properly whilst he was manning a roadblock.
Considering the feelings of the survivors about the person that the police
have taken into custody, for deliberately lighting one of the fires, that
killed some of the victims, somebody might like to remind us all in the
fire area why Lynch Law is not a good thing in these situations.
The newly occupied Yarra Valley Amateur Radio Group club rooms survived
even though the fire came almost to the walls. The clubs emergency comms
trailer has been burnt to the ground with all it's fittings. I will send
some 7+ pictures if anyone is interested in burnt out trailers and fire
storm photos.
The club IRLP node running from my QTH (Node 6414) was also down for the
same period and for the same reason. It is also back up again.
I will send out another bulletin when I contact a few more people, I have
only been home for about three hours.
