VK7 REGIONAL NEWS BROADCAST

FOR SUNDAY 8th FebruarY 2009

------------------------------------------------------------------

"MEET THE VOICE BBQ" ROSS SUNDAY MATCH 22nd..

A day of sun and no wind has been ordered so SLIP SLOP SLAP ,
bring your sun cream, hats etc.

Ross now has a reasonable drinking water supply available once again
so we will be in luxurious surroundings.

Registration from 10am, $5.00 cover charge per amateur or amateur
family, any surplus will be towards some amateur Radio activity,
no funds held over. 2007 we donated to the upkeep of repeaters,
and last year you donated over $200 dollars which was used to assist
the payment of licence fees for those repeaters state wide.

A decision on the day will be made as to where all surplus registration
monies will go.

Ray VK7VKV is waiting your call about your need for a space for the car
boot sale, he is on the Sewing Circle most week end sessions,
call him then.

How about inviting an amateur senior or otherwise who you think would
enjoy the outing and meeting with old and new friends to join you on
the day I am sure many would have a spare seat.

This is a great opportunity for you to make contact with the voice you
have spoken to but have never met in person.
The day is designed around that premise.

I finish today with a reminder that the Tasmanian Sewing Circle Radio
Net occurs daily around 5pm on 3.59MHz. WELCOME ONE AND ALL.

-----------------------------

Meet the Voice - Bargain Boot Bonanza

Do you have pre-loved amateur radio related equipment that is surplus
to requirements? If so, do we have a fantastic opportunity for you?

As part of the Meet the Voice/Sewing Circle BBQ at Ross on 22nd March,
a Bargain Boot Bonanza has been organised to allow you to part with
the equipment you no longer have room or use for.

Participation is covered in your registration fee, the only condition
is that you provide your own car boot or table on which to display the
treasures, and that you don't begin offering the bargains for sale
until 12.00 midday so as not to detract from the other organised events
on the day.

Hams are always looking for a bargain so this is a great opportunity to
do a deal.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Contesting News

VK7 Winner Bio - Jack Files Contest

The 2008 Jack Files contest has been and gone and the VK7 State winner
in 2008 was Laurie Davison VK7ZE. Congratulations Laurie.

When looking up Laurie on the various QSL bureau and contact websites I
came across some great info about Laurie's other interests!

For those who haven't seen Laurie's QSL card it shows him riding a
working horse which is described as

"Laurie riding Pasa Doble. This combination took out the 2006 National
Cutting Horse Association Tasmanian Cutting Horse Association Area 8
Novice Open Champions.

Pasa Doble recently had a filly foal by Who's Top Cat, a son of USA's
famous sire Highbrow Cat."

Laurie's station is also described and is a very impressive setup.

Take a look at the email and internet editions of this broadcast for more
information and take a look at Laurie's great QSL card.

A BIG Thank YOU

Broadcasters Extraordinaire

A big thank you to Charles VK7PP who for many, many years has been involved
with the 20m rebroadcast of the VK7 Regional News each Sunday.

Charles and his XYL are downsizing their QTH and I'm told that the landmark
2 element quad for 20, 15 & 10 and tower in Lindisfarne has gone to a
good home.

Good luck and thanks Charles.

Also a big thank you to Jim VK7JH who let me know that after 20 years of
doing broadcasts it was time to give it a rest and in Jim's words –

"I have decided that there are too many other things I should be doing on
Sunday mornings."

Jim commented that –

"20 years ago we had cassette tapes and unreliable RF links to contend with.
- It was fun then in a different sort of way. Certainly more of a challenge.
The Internet has a lot to answer for."

On behalf of all our listeners around VK7 I would like thank Jim and Charles
and we wish you best wishes and good luck for the future.

(Justin, VK7TW, VK7 Broadcast and News Coordinator)

NORTH WEST News

North West Tasmanian Amateur Radio Interest Group

AGM Report

The annual general meeting of the North West Tasmania Amateur Radio
Interest Group was held at Ulverstone on 31 January 2009 and it brought
about a complete change in all office bearer positions.

A ballot was conducted for President and committee member and the new
committee comprises:

President – Anne Landers VK7BYL

Vice President – Dick Whatley VK7FORF

Secretary – Brian Poke VK7FAYE

Treasurer – Vernon French VK7VF

Committee - Winston Nickols VK7EM

The new committee will work towards revitalising the club,
by introducing practical training days and more social activities.

Our normal bi-monthly meeting was held following the AGM, and with the
temperature climbing to 30 degrees or more one of the first decisions
made was the adoption of a new meeting place.

Early in the year a sub-committee had investigated 4 possible sites in
the Penguin area and after a detailed report was given to the meeting,
one was selected.

Members are now looking forward to cream cake
(promised by one of the XYL's) and coffee at the new venue,
located in the Old Council chambers, Ironcliffe Rd., Penguin,
adjacent to the football ground.

Our regular Tuesday "natternet" at 2000 on VK7RMD, Mt. Duncan,
is followed at 2100 by a replay of the WIA National News broadcast
courtesy VK7EM. This is proving popular with many of the locals.

NWTARIG is preparing for a practical session involving soldering and
kit building.
The date for this will be announced shortly.
This session will be conducted at St. Mary's church hall Penguin.

Those wishing to take part are advised to buy a small kit or bring along
that half built project you put aside. Assistance will be given in the
art of soldering. BYO soldering iron and project.

Coffee mornings for the club will resume shortly, the date and venue to
be advised as we wish to spread our meetings to venues along the NW coast.

(73 Anne VK7BYL President NWTARIG)

General News

North West amateurs are invited to a B.Y.O. BBQ on February the 14th at
Hiscutt Park, Penguin for a ragchew and BBQ. The BBQ will be about 12noon
but people are welcome to wander in between 1030 and 1500.

Everyone is welcome and seeing it's Valentines Day bring the yl/xyl along.
Electric BBQ's available under cover.

NORTHERN NEWS

Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club

Hear ye all NTARC'ians. The Annual General Meeting will be held on
Wednesday night, 7.30pm at Alanvale Polytechnic Campus
(or Alanvale TAFE if you're used to that name), in Room C2-18 which is on
the ground floor of C Block.
The entrance for this room is adjacent to the usual entry area,
and there will be signs to lead the way.

After many years of faithful service, Al VK7AN will be standing down
as President (or should that be Monarch?) of NTARC, and we will be looking
for a new leader to fill Al's shoes.
Do you think you can take on the job?
Then come along to the AGM and make your nomination.

This will also be your last chance to pay membership dues for NTARC if you
have let it slip your mind.

And while you're at the AGM, there are a very limited number of call books
available for sale, I'm told you can count the remaining number of call books
up for adoption on one hand now, so if you still want one,
better get in fast.

After the official part of the meeting is out of the way, Phil VK7JJ will
be explaining his highly effective milti-band HF squid pole antenna.
Phil has a real knack of explaining antenna theory and construction,
and I'll certainly be listening with great interest,
as should anyone who may want a portable, transportable HF antenna for
camping or field use, or even for home use where you might not want to
have a permanent antenna fixture.

Al, VK7AN lets us know that VK7FLI will be active on the 18th of February.
What a magnificent operating location Flinders Island must be… low noise,
by the sea, and stunning scenery.
No wonder many DX'ers are jealous of VK7FLI.

NTARC would also like to thank WICEN Southern Tasmania for their generous
donation. We figure the most practical use of the donation in assisting
the cause of WICEN would be to go towards the upkeep of the repeaters in
the area. Thank you WICEN South, its very much appreciated.

It's great to see a local Amateur operator receiving such recognition and
appreciation for his works. VK7FBAW Bryn is the reassuring voice heard on
the marine bands throughout Northern Tasmania and Bass Strait.
Bryn puts in literally thousands of hours as a Search & Rescue co-ordinator
for the Australian Volunteer Coast Guard.
Using the callsignVMR703, Bryn broadcasts weather reports and takes
position reports for the Tamar Sea Rescue Association.
His dedication to the job has earned Bryn a Tasmanian Senior
"Australian of the Year" nomination for 2009.
Congratulations Bryn, your dedication is an inspiration to us all.

The Scanning Tasmania group is having a friendly DX competition at
the moment, which will run until the 12th of March so you have plenty
of time to participate. The competition focuses on the AM broadcast band
and is strictly for fun – no prizes, no glory, just good old-fashioned fun.
If you'd like to know a bit more, visit the scanning Tasmania
website: www.scanningtasmania.org and navigate your way to the forum
and then to the HF/Shortwave section.

And as a final note, for the first time since 1938, 1098 kHz
– radio station 7LA – has ceased transmitting on the MF band.
No doubt it was a bit of a nostalgic moment for Mark VK7KMA when their
Rocherlea broadcast facility went silent for the last time.
Mark is the senior technician for the radio station there.
But I'm sure Mark will be kept busy with his new collection of FM
transmitters hihi.

Thanks from

(Jason, VK7ZJA, NTARC Secretary)

The REAST committee wishes to advise that the Association's annual
general meeting will be held on Sunday 15th March at 10:30am at the
REAST clubrooms following the broadcast.
After the AGM there will be a BYO barbecue lunch.

for any positions on the committee,

day on Saturday February 21st with the assessment night on Tuesday
February 24th.

ATV Experimenters Night

We get back underway this Wednesday night with our ATV Experimenter's
night and we have a jam-packed night planned.

Our 1250MHz digital ATV transmitter is up and going and we will be
planning some field strength trips out and around Hobart over the next
few ATV nights.

We will even be transmitting from Mt Wellington sometime to see just
how far we can get with 7 watts of digital ATV.

So, if you have a digital satellite receiver (DVB-S) and would like to
participate in these tests then please let me know.

We will be playing Episode 20 of AmateurLogic.TV and is all about those
clandestine number stations heard on the short-wave bands and also a
Factory Tour of the HyGain Factory and this episode features Peter
Berrett VK3PB as one of the hosts.

So another exciting ATV Experimenter's nights this Wednesday night the
11th of Feb around 7:30pm.

How do you receive ATV on an ATV night well, ATV goes out on 444.25MHz
(Channel 16) – just below SBS on the UHF TV Band.
You will need an antenna with some gain pointed toward the Domain to
receive our signal so, why not try tuning down the low end of the
UHF TV band and give us a call on what you are seeing and hearing.

See you there.
