Meet the Voice BBQ
Sewing Circle Net
This year as requested by many, the third annual "Meet The Voice" BBQ
is scheduled for Sunday March 22nd. and of course it is again at the
Ross Caravan Park.
As this BBQ is sponsored by the 'SEWING CIRCLE DAILY NET" we will this
year include the "SEWING CIRCLE BBQ" previously held in November of
each year.
So let us call it "MEET THE VOICE SEWING CIRCLE BBQ" and remember those
great times organised by VK7AWW Bill Donald & Ken Sulman VK7DY
As in previous years those who wish to make an early start, you are
welcome to make Ross from Friday or Saturday and be on site for the
day's events on the Sunday.
Registration from 10AM Sunday for the BBQ & events cost $5.00 for
individuals and families, with profits to be distributed to some
Amateur
Radio assistance, yet to be decided.
As usual FREE BBQ facilities available.
See you at Ross Sunday March 22, 2009.

WIA National Broadcast Milestone
VK7 up with the select few!
Each week Graham VK4BB gathers from all over Australia the callback
numbers from each rebroadcaster and compiles them into a callback tally
sheet that is commenced from the start if the WIA broadcast year.
The WIA broadcast year starts from the WIA AGM which this year was on
26th May 2008.
There have been a total of 69,591 total checkins since the AGM.
Each week Graham highlights those repeaters that reach 1000 checkins and
the callback tally for January 4 included a highlight for VK7.
VK7RAD/RHT reached 1038 checkins.
This puts VK7 up with only three other states with this number of checkins
on a single repeater.
The highest is VK5RAD with 1904, then comes VK6RAP with 1348 and VK4RSC
with 1090. Considering the number of amateurs in VKs 4, 5 and 6, I think VK7
is doing very well.
Thanks to our regular callback reporters – VK7JK, VK7YBG, VK7JH and VK7AX.

NORTHERN NEWS
Northern Tasmanian Amateur Radio Club
Did you miss out on a call book? Do you still want to get your hands on one?
Well fear not, we have another box of call books on the way.
They should be arriving soon, so keep an ear out on VK7RAA for news of their
landing in Launceston.
You could conveniently collect yours at the AGM meeting in February if that
suits you.
Speaking of the AGM, Peter VK7PD informs us that while the meeting will still
be held at Alanvale TAFE as per usual, the normal room in Block B won't be
available but Peter will arrange for signs to guide us to the designated room
on the night. Thanks Peter, your help in arranging this is very much
appreciated by all.
We humans are less than perfect at times. Every now and then, we need to go
into hospital to let the men & ladies in green & white gowns to fine tune our
internal plumbing. At those times it's comforting to know that friends are
thinking of you and wishing you a speedy recovery. All of us at NTARC would
like to wish Al VK7AN a speedy recovery after a brief visit to hospital,
and hope to hear you back on air soon.
Lastly, just a quick reminder that membership fees are due for 2009
please see Ann VK7FYBG if you have any questions or queries about this.

The Wednesday afternoon group applauds Ben VK7BEN's efforts to tidy up the
clubrooms and the Wednesday Group is planning to sort out the back room
in the back shed and take the unclaimed, unwanted, stuff to the tip.
So, if anyone wants anything best get it soon….HIHI.

AGM & Membership Reminder
The REAST committee wishes to advise that the association's annual general
meeting will be held on Sunday 15th March at 10:30am at the REAST clubrooms
following the broadcast. After the AGM there will be a BYO barbecue lunch.
The positions of treasurer, secretary and both general committee members
will be vacating so please think about whom you would like to nominate for
any positions on the committee, or if you would like to be nominated.
It's a new year so the 2009 subscriptions are due. This year if you are
paying your subscription by direct deposit your receipt number and transfer
description must be written on your renewal form so that payments can be
easily identified. A new renewal form is being developed with the
appropriate fields but make sure you include this information.
Furthermore, many members have changed their call signs in the last year
with the two letter call sign ballot and for other reasons so if your call
sign has changed in the last year please make sure this is clearly marked
on your renewal form. Once completed, the updated renewal form will be
available on the main page of the web site and at the clubrooms.

ATV Experimenters Night
We get back underway with the ATV experimenters nights this Wednesday
night from around 7:30pm. I will be presenting the newly constructed
1250MHz 1watt and 18 watt power amplifiers that we will be using for
the digital ATV transmitter experiments with Jack's VK2TRF's digital
ATV transmitter.
We also have some more AMSAT presentations as well and the next episode
of AmateurLogic.TV and this is episode 18 where we start to see Australian
content included in the program.
How do you receive ATV on an ATV night well, ATV goes out on 444.25MHz
(Channel 16) – just below SBS on the UHF TV Band. You will need an antenna
with some gain pointed toward the Domain to receive our signal so, why not
try tuning down the low end of the UHF TV band and give us a call on what
you are seeing and hearing.
See you there.

Launch Alert for Seven Small Satellites on January 21
Mineo Wakita, JE9PEL sent a Cubesat launch alert for seven amateur radio
satellites planned as secondary payloads when Japan launches its GOSAT
IBUKI satellite on January 21, 2009 at 03.54 UTC.
GOSAT - Greenhouse gases Observing SATellite is an environmental monitoring
satellite which will be launched from Japan's Tanegashima Space Center
aboard the H-IIA F15 booster.
The seven satellite names are:
KAGAYAKI, STARS, KKS-1, PRISM, SOHLA-1, SPRITE and SDS-1.
Information about the primary mission and satellites can be found at the
addresses on the email and internet editions of this broadcast.

http://www.amsat.org - see the bottom story
Masa, JN1GKZ reported that the small satellites are technically not CubeSats
since they are larger in size and each platform is a unique design.
They will be launched into a sun synchronous orbit to an altitude of 660km
with an inclination of 98.1 degrees. The orbital period is estimated to be
98 minutes.

General News
WWVB Occasionally Drops Off The Air
The time and frequency station that synchronizes radio-controlled clocks
and wristwatches across the U.S. is WWVB, 60 kHz, near Fort Collins,
Colorado. The station broadcasts with two antennas and two transmitters
for reliability but still drops off the air on occasion.
That was the case on December 11, 2008 from 11:36 AM to 12:17 PM PST
and CG Communicator asked what happened.
It turns out that winds of about 50 MPH or more physically move WWVB's
wire antennas enough to upset the impedance match to the transmitters.
Even though an automated tuning system is in place, it can't keep up
with rapid reactance shifts caused by big winds according to the facility
manager.
The best solution for WWVB in the presence of high winds is to assign an
operator (when possible) to manually correct the antenna reactance,
just the way a board operator "rides gain" on audio from a live stage
production. An operator can react faster than the present automated
impedance controller.
During normal operation, WWVB transmits 24 hours per day, seven days a week,
providing the nation with reliable time and frequency information.
CGC uses WWVB to synchronize its master oscillator which is then used
in CGC's frequency measuring service.
(GPS is not authorized for this purpose, see FCC Rules)

History & Humour News
Tasmanian Jubilee Hamfest
The following was sent through by David VK7ZDJ and is sourced from the
February 1974 edition of Q.R.M. The following poem was composed by Max Ives
VK7MX and was recited by Max at the Tasmanian Jubilee Hamfest.
The Ham's a very busy bloke, he has no time to spare.
The shack is always pretty rough, with rubbish here and there.
This was the case around my joint, law and order was alack.
At least I found requirements, till the misses cleaned the shack.
I'll never know what prompted her, she'd never tried before.
I really thought she didn't care, or knew the unwritten law.
But undeterred she sailed right in, the rubbish to attack.
She really did a dreadful thing, when the misses cleaned the shack.
To gain access to most surfaces, she had to move most gear.
There was no harm in doing this, although results were queer.
Most things she left just where they were, and didn't put them back.
So everything was back to front, when the misses cleaned the shack.
You know how things are left around, to hand when needed most.
Mine finished up in boxes, and virtually were lost.
I couldn't find a dad-durn thing, components now I lack.
I should have run the nuisance in, when the misses cleaned the shack.
Condensers were resistors, inductors packed with pots.
I could have sold some boxes, as mixed assorted lots.
There was no law and order, apart from a panel rack.
I bit my nails and tore my hair, when the misses cleaned the shack.
An RF choke was needed, by 7ZAQ.
I said I know I got one, and you're welcome to it too.
I searched and looked and fumed and swore, my hair turned from red to black.
It didn't help its missing still, since the misses cleaned the shack.
A mouse got in and made a nest, but I found the little pest.
It was very comfy in a box, but it went quickly west.
Now in that box was a piece of gear, I'd lost from sometime back.
That incident shows what I mean, when the misses cleaned the shack.
This happened many years ago, it was never done again.
The lecture lasted several months, the message was quite plain.
She's quite a dear at normal times, but she sure got off the track.
The day she went and went beserk, and cleaned the flaming shack.
