Net. Early checkin from Charley, NT5R, who
is in Mexico, as the world traveler. :)
Net order is Daryl, Bob (NY), Carl, Glenn,
Bob (OK), Eric, and whoever else shows up.
Winter Storm Fern made her presence known
over much of the country, and she was a
mean YL, with her icy personality giving
everyone more than just the cold shoulder!!
Widespread snow, sleet, freezing rain,
highway wrecks (mainly jack-knifed tractor
trailers), power outages, damage, and more,
stretched from New Mexico and Colorado,
east through the Arklatex, Arklamiss, and
MidSouth regions, the Missouri, Mississippi,
Tennessee, and the Ohio Valley regions,
into the southeast US, plus the DelMarva,
the MidAtlantic and New England.
For Arkansas, north Arkanas got mostly snow,
central Arkansas got mostly sleet, and south
Arkansas got mostly freezing rain, but it
looks like Louisiana and Mississippi were
hard hit by the ice storm. Ahead of the cold
front along the Gulf Coast, you had tornadoes.
I was on the air with The Weather Watch Net
for nearly 16 hours over 2 days, getting
storm reports, sending them to the National
Weather Service, and providing updates.
Much of northern Arkansas won't get back
above freezing until next month, and another
winter storm may affect the Gulf Coast region
this coming weekend. Many schools, businesses,
government offices, and more, will likely be
closed the rest of the month; and it will take
a good while to repair and clean up the damage,
and to restore power. I dread what the tornado
season may bring down here in 6 weeks.
I added some more items to the Ham Radio Humor
files, off the hyperlink on my QRZ bio...most
of these are from the Amateur Radio Funnies
Group on Facebook. I also had to start finalizing
the articles for the ham radio and square dance
publications that I do, both due on February 1.
If the ground hog says 6 more weeks of winter
next Monday, he may be eaten by wolves, or shot
by angry hunters (hi hi).

GE All.
Another week! Cold and snow - 14f and 18" of
snow. I guess we got off relatively easy given
the conditions in other parts of the country.
Not much else going on here. Still pondering
the lockup/shutdown of the node. Most recent
change has been the update of the HTML stack
for the node. It has been running ok since
then, but now I've jinxed it! hihi
Still playing Hamword. I think I'm on guess
4 today.

Bob, you did get off easy...some areas haven't
seen a snow and ice storm like this in quite
awhile. Mobile, Alabama had a Tornado Watch,
and an Extreme Cold Watch in the same day.
Yep, I'll bet the node will crash later this

GE All. Well, no snow here in Phoenix, but it
has gotten 5-10 degrees cooler over the last
week. My sister in New Jersey got something
like a foot and a half of snow, and now her
dog does not want to go outside any more.
On the radio front I got my GMRS license as
well as a GMRS HT. There is definitely GMRS
activity around; there even seems to be a
monthly weather net, but the local 2m repeaters
definitely have more traffic. We have a couple
of pretty active nets on 2m/70cm.
Glad Bob reminded me about hamword. Need to
start the new week's word.

Carl, FB on the weather in Phoenix. As for the
dog, it's like the meme where FIDO looks at
the weather outside, and growls "I'm pooping in
the house today". Another meme has a dachshund,
noting "I'm so glad you're home!! Someone pooped
in the hallway!!" (hi hi). FB on the GMRS nets...
I don't know if it's worth the cost or effort to
get a license and get into that...and FB on
HamWord.

Good evening All, can I tell you I am done with
winter!
14f and 11" of snow yesterday 22f today but going
down to 2f tonight.
Finished up this months PKTNET net with 123
check-ins. It was a little down this month, but
not too bad.
Done with the shoveling as well, getting way too
old for this stuff.

winter. Arkansas was overdue for a big storm.
Those wanting snow now should move to either the
north pole or Antarctica!!

It has been VERY cold here in central OK, with
around -6F wind chill at night, and up into the
teens during the day. We got 8+ inches of snow;
fortunately we got very little amount of sleet
or freezing rain, so no major power outages.
As a reference, that amount of snow in 48 hours
is more that we receive in a whole typical winter
season.
I've been absent the last several weeks, with
family activities as a priority.
Just wanted to report an update on the Wavenode
UHF-1 RF sensor I mentioned before. I've been
able to connect it up and it does a nice job of
providing voltages proportional to both forward
and reflected rf power up to 300W.
I'm using it to monitor a repeater's rf, along
with some other sensors for other parameters
such as voltage, current, and temperatures.

It's chilly over here in Maryland. Thermometer
says 18F right now. We received ~5" of snow
and sleet as of last night about this time,
but then received quite a bit of freezing
rain overnight.
The kids have been enjoying riding their
bicycles ON the ice, as it's so thick that
they don't crash through to the snow. Even
I'm not breaking through! The Chesapeake Bay
is freezing around the edges (out about 20
or 30 feet).
It appears that we won't be warming up any
time soon. I just saw a WX forecast that
says we might get more snow this upcoming
weekend. Schools are already closed for
tomorrow and I'm not going to try to make
it into the office. I might be going crazy
by tomorrow morning. hi hi
I wonder if KX4AC made it out to Quartzfest
this year.

Eric, I saw a meme that noted "whoever you're
staying with, you had better like them, as
you may be stuck with them for a few days"

They were telling parents to keep their kids
off the lakes and ponds, for the very thin
ice on top. The cold weather folks should be
happy now.

was a thing. I see the website now, though,
and that camel is really cute. Sorry I missed
it, I am surprised that nobody on the local

Carl, I found Quartzfest via rabbit hole when
looking into the area. A friend is camping in
the long-term camping area just south of
Quartzsite and I find the area facinating.
Maybe I can make it out that way for next
year's event.
Daryl: Yeah, I was testing things. I don't
really like using Winlink Express, so I'll
probably stop using it. I will probably go
back to using your HTML forms.
