Greetings to the Digital Airwaves!
As the clock ticks toward midnight and the calendar flips to 2026, I wanted to send a burst of data across the nodes to wish everyone in the packet radio community a very Happy New Year!
There is something timeless about the "braap" of a packet transmission-a reminder that even in an age of high-speed fiber optics, we still find joy in the art of sending data via the ionosphere and local VHF/UHF links. Whether you are connecting via a local PBBS, routing through a high-level node, or monitoring the APRS stream, it is the community that keeps these frequencies alive.
Reflecting on the Past Year
The last 12 months have been a testament to the resilience of amateur radio. We've seen:
Renewed Interest: More operators experimenting with soundcard modes and Nino TNCs.
Emergency Preparedness: Continued dedication to keeping digital networks ready for when they are needed most.
Technical Growth: New software developments including WhatsPac that make the "old" tech feel brand new.
Looking Ahead to 2026
In the coming year, I hope your signal-to-noise ratio stays high and your retries stay low. May your antennas withstand the winter winds, and may your TNCs never lose their configuration.
My New Year's Resolutions for the Shack:
Optimize my node's beacon interval to reduce channel congestion.
Experiment with high-speed packet on VHF/UHF.
Help at least one new ham get their first packet station online.
