N5VLZ:
GE all, and welcome to the Oct 13 2025 PCL
Net. Early checkin for Rick, VA7RBP, as
today was the Canadian Thanksgiving Holiday.
The Americans get the table scraps, as we
have to wait nearly 7 more weeks (hi hi).
Net order is Daryl, Bob (NY), Charley, Carl,
Bob (OK), and whoever else shows up.
Coming up on Sunday, Nov. 2, is the TIME
CHANGE back to Standard Time. The time
for this, and most other nets won't change,
but UTC Times for the nets will be an hour
later. You recover that hour of sleep you
lost in the spring, but while it's lighter
in the morning, it's dark by late afternoon.
We have a threat for severe weather Saturday
into Sunday, including tornadoes, large hail,
damaging wind, flooding rain, and intense
lightning. The northeast US has been dealing
with a wet nor'easter this week, and there's
a potential for tornadoes across southwest
California Tuesday morning. And, western
Montana and the Sierras are getting heavy
snow.
Santa must've forgiven me for my attitude,
or he was touched by the helpfulness I had
given to hams and others lately. I got a
SharkRF M1KE, plus a Kroger $100 gift card
for food.
I'm working on the last set of those Hormel
Compleats, but I'm in one of those "nothing
sounds good, food wise" moods. It took awhile,
but I set up the M1KE on the device (I wish
I had realized I could have done it on my web
browser)...but I don't yet have a node...
although I will be "RF-less", as it were. I'll
just use it when I'm on AllStar, which may not
be that much. I'm only on the air when I'm
doing my nets, and rarely have a sked request.
I've had to miss in state hamfests lately, but
I'm working on at the 2026 Shreveport hamfest.
I may take Amtrak down and back (train and
thruway bus), and spend a couple of extra days
there. Yet, that isn't until next August. I'm
still waiting on that settlement from my late
brother's estate, so I can take care of the
mess under the house. But, at least the property
taxes are paid for the year.
The government is still shut down (I thought
that was always the case (hi hi)), so examinees
have to wait for it to end, so the licensing
deals can be processed. There may be such a huge
backlog of data that it may crash the FCC ULS!!
I obtained a bunch of photos from the state
square dance festival this past weekend, and
did quite a bit of work on the next issue, which
I'll release late on Oct. 26. I've been catching
up on sleep lately, as that ham radio deal at the
local college fall picnic last week was fun, but
standing much of the time was very hard on me. At
least we had good weather for it.
The lunch deal I had planned this past Saturday,
with a lady friend and her significant other, was
postponed until next month...his Mom needed him
to do some work. She was quite disappointed, to
say the least. It gave me Lyft funds for the
National Drug Take Back deal on Oct. 25, where I
can get rid of a bunch of old and unused meds.
Tomorrow, Oct. 14, is the final security update
for Windows 10 systems. One can purchase one extra
year for $30, but I have wondered if Microsoft was
deliberately embedding stuff to slow the system
down, so you would upgrade to Windows 11. I'll bet
a lot of folks won't do the upgrade, or pay the
fee; and they may switch to Mac or Linux.
I go to see my podiatrist on Wednesday, then my PCP
on Oct. 29 for the full physical/wellness check. I'm
not sure if I'll get the flu shot there, or take part
in a hospital study. The latter lasts 6 months, and
if I qualify, I can get a nice compensation.
GE Bob (NY), how was your week?? >>>
**
NS2B:
GE All!
An uneventful week.
FB on the M1KE Daryl. I hear a lot of those on DMR.
They sound as good as any radio as far as I can tell.
After you workout Allstar you should try D*Star.
Got Hamword on the 2nd guess again this week. It's
either rigged or I'm cheating! hihi
Made another APRS contact with the ISS this week.
Speaking of Dr. visits - got my flu shot last week -
went down to get an RSV shot today. I was I was too
young! Never been accused of that before! So got a
Covid shot instead.
Today, it rained all day here. Made a mess of my
mowing plans. Maybe if it dries out tomorrow...
That's all for me. BTU Daryl >>>
**
N5VLZ:
Bob, maybe the game felt sorry for you (hi hi). I'm
not sure which is more trouble...setting up all the
profiles on the M1KE, or just using it for Allstar,
and the other apps for the other modes.
I canceled my lawn deal until Oct. 28...hopefully,
the last mow until spring will arrive soon. FB on
the APRS contact with the ISS.
GE Charley, how was your week?? >>>
**
NT5R:
GE everyone,good week
The M1KE sounds interesting. Seen a bit of info
about that and would be handy for travel. Have
the T1000E for Mesh and that if much handy for
travel and staying in contact via 915 MHz mesh
nodes
Yesterday early morning, drove to Sedalia MO,
nearly three hours but good hamfest.
Last time there, had two raffle tickets and won
two prizes including $100 bioenno battery and
charger. No such luck this time.
Another fellow from our Branson club rode with
me and 4 others from club came in another vehicle.
No big purchases, few connectors etc.
One good presentation about DV Digital Voice by
one fellow who has been involved with DV since
first development. They are improving fidelity
using AI, sounding better.
Our club VP bought clean used KPC3+ for 50 dollars.
If he had not I would have. We are using our club
KPC3+ now for APRS fill-in digi, also have it set
up to cycle between 4 beacons of club and local
info. Works excellent for the application.
Enough rambling, btu Daryl>>>
**
N5VLZ:
Charley, that M1KE is becoming the Ham Radio Swiss
Army Knife with portability. FB on the hamfest, and
the KPC3+ TNC's for club and local info.
GE Carl...hope you're doing better. I got the email,
but didn't mention that on the air. How are you
doing??
**
KX4AC:
GE All, it is definitely good to be back.
I was in the hospital for two solid weeks, and it
has taken as much time to get at least partly back
to normal. I still look a bit like Frankenstein's
Monster, but everything seems to be healing, and
I am feeling a bit stronger this week.
The good news is that they found no additional
cancer and the lymph nodes are all clear, so no
chemotherapy, and hopefully I am done with this
for a bit.
We have been having quite a bit of rain lately,
though "a lot" of rain for us is "a bit" of rain
for the rest of you. The lawn is happy, but so
are the weeds, so I guess there is good and bad.
The weather is getting better here, and it is a
joy to just sit out on the porch now.
I am going to have to do something about the rig
in the car. The Arizona heat completely killed
the LCD! I guess maybe I need to rig up something
that I can take into the house when not in use.
Sheesh!
I am slowly getting back into projects, though my
energy is still not what it was before. Hopefully,
that will keep improving.
Guess that's about it for now. Back to net >>>
**
N5VLZ:
Carl, glad for the good health report. Not perfect,
but better than it was. I have 2 hams from Arizona
that checkin on the QCWA Nets via Facebook, and I
was wondering how much rain they had gotten. I saw
where there was a flood emergency in some areas.
FB on the nice weather, but bummer on the LCD being
fried...hope you can get that fixed.
GE Bob (OK), how was your week?? >>>
**
KF5TVG:
GE Daryl and all on the net!
Carl, so glad to hear you are on the mend. Hang in
there!
Daryl, I had a "relatively" good Win10 laptop hiccup
a few months ago, and crash the hard drive. So, I've
spent some time over the last few days attempting to
recover it prior to tomorrow's deadline... to no
avail. So you guessed it, I loaded ubuntu linux on it
this afternoon and it runs like a champ!
Bob, the author of hamword is here in Norman, so I'll
have him load a special set of words for you... just
to give you more of a challenge! hi hi
Last Saturday was my 75th birthday... and I don't feel
a day over 100!
That's all from here. BTU Daryl>>>
**
N5VLZ:
Bob (OK), first, happy belated birthday. Second, I'm
sure that Bob (NY) appreciates the gesture (hi hi).
And I know you were happy giving a big raspberry to
Microsoft Windows (hi hi).
That's it for round 1...back to the top for final
comments.
Bob (NY), thanks for the use of the BBS. Anything
else?? >>>
**
NS2B:
Carl, hang in there and get well.
Bob, I normally use most of my guesses - I don't know
if I need any "help"!!! hihi
I've gone to linux for most of my "life" stuff, email,
banking, etc. And my portable setup has all the the
digital stuff I need on linux, like WSJT-X and FLdigi,
etc.
But I need a windows machine for most of my radio
programming software. Maybe when my extension runs
out I'll just take it off the network and all it will
be use for is programming radios.
That's it! everyone have a good week - 73 >>>
**
N5VLZ:
Thanks for being here, Bob...have a good week.
Charley, anything else?? >>>
**
NT5R:
Happy Columbus Day everyone. I was born in Columbus
Kansas. Be sending good vibes Carl. Belated Happy
Birthday OK Bob.
Have an awesome week everyone. Type at you all again
soon. 73>>>
**
Thanks for being here Charley...see you next time.
Carl, anything else?? >>>
**
KX4AC:
Thanks to everyone for the good wishes. Nothing else
from me tonight. 73s to all. >>>
**
N5VLZ:
Thanks for being here, Carl...take care.
Bob (OK), anything else?? >>>
**
KF5TVG:
Nothing else tonight. Big Thanks to Daryl and Bob (NY)
for making the net happen. 73>>>
**
N5VLZ:
Thanks for being here, Bob. I didn't think I could play
HamWord via telnet (RMS Express), but would appreciate
any help.
That'll do it for tonight's PCL Net. I'll post the scribe
on Tuesday, as I have to get ready for another net tonight.
73 and GN DE N5VLZ. >>>
