N5VLZ:

Winter made itself known in a big way Jan. 9-10
with snow over much of north and central Arkansas,
and ice down south. Little Rock got 9 inches of
snow, with some freezing rain and sleet at the
onset. Mena in west Arkansas and Briggsville in
north Arkansas got nearly 15 inches of snow. I saw
a storm chaser video on I-430 in west Little Rock,
and an 18-wheeler tractor trailer fish-tailed and
jack-knifed right in front of him!! Many schools
have been closed since last Thursday, especially
where the shady/secondary roads have had little
melting. Rain is likely Friday and Friday night,
followed by much colder weather next week. Tornado,
mosquito, and pollen season will return soon enough.

I've been earning AARP rewards, plus playing Pyramid
Solitaire on the cellphone. I need to get that
Christmas laptop powered up, but I'm afraid it may
have spyware on it. So, I need to do a clean install
of it. I hope to take it with me on my train/bus trips
for ham radio events, set for mid-May to Wichita, KS...
and early August in Shreveport, LA. If I can get some
funds from my late brother's 401k after taxes, I hope
to go to the Huntsville, AL Hamfest in mid-August, and
then top it off with the Duke City Hamfest out in
Albuquerque, NM in mid-September. I'm looking at doing
Amtrak and Bus with them, or transport from local hams.
With health, vision, and financial issues, these long
overdue trips will be my last ones that I will take
outside of Arkansas. The train trips take longer, but
are much cheaper than flying.

[My replies to other stations are toward the end of
this post]

NT0Y:

Well thank you for running the net here. Brand new
guy to packet radio in general and getting to know
basically everything I can in a single sitting.

In the last few weeks I've set up BPQ, done some
local forwarding, then expanded out into national
forwarding mostly with AXIP, and I'm now getting
into more precise routing.

N5MDT has been a huge help with getting this all set
up, as has KD8MJJ, who has also joined here.
Everything and everybody has been extremely helpful,
just like most hams I tend to come across in this
hobby.

Excuse me if I have a bunch of errors here, I can't
seem to find a way to backspace :)))))

Anyway, thanks for having me and it's good to see a
packet net running.

I did enjoy the net, I appreciate you holding it!
Just adding to the packet journey here. 73 to all,
and thanks again. >>>

NS2B:

GE All.

An uneventful week. Sounds like you have more snow
that we do! It has been pretty light here, even though
east and west of us have been hammered.

On the ham radio front they're running an FLdigi class
at the Antique Wireless Association for the next three
Saturdays. A friend of mine is teaching it. Even though
I've used it for years, I signed up for it, partly for
moral support, partly cuz I know I'm bound to learn
something I didn't know.

Welcome and thanks to the new checkins! It keeps us
going! That's all for me - 73 to all! >>>

K0LAI:

GE All

I have been a packeteer for many years, but I just got
my first BPQ station setup, thanks to KE0GB helping me
with my Rasp Pi 5

This is my first packet net

Wx here is cold in the -9 F

Not much snow excpet this weekend was 3 inches.

Other than that I am working on adding HF to my station
soon.

I have had fun - Looks like I am not the only newbie >>>

VA7RBP:

GE Daryl and all on NET.

Nothing exciting to report for this week. The weather
here has been cloudy, temps at night dropping to single
digits F, and up to high 30's F during the day.
Surprisingly, we have only had a few dustings of snow,
that have disappeared during the day.

Just the usual activities..40M and 20M PACTOR in the
mornings, then I've been playing a bit with HF APRS on
30M, using VARA and PINPOINT.

Also been trying to learn 3D printing, and I am still
trying to repair an old TS-50 that had leaky caps...

And that's about it, Oh, welcome to all the new folks!

Everyone have a great week, stay well, 73 until next time.

KG3SWR:

GE everyone on the net. Thanks for letting a bunch of
first-timers from Lansing MI clog up your net

Running a KPC and getting to know my way around it. A
few of us on here are getting into packet more and more.
Really enjoying it.

Lots of good infrastructure near us that supports packet
making it easy to move our way around from Grand Rapids
all the way to Detroit.

So I'll keep it short. Nice visiting and reading the mssgs.
I'll be an in and out check in so thanks for letting us
check in. 73 everyone. Back to net >>>

KF8BRD:

lansing group

First time taking part in a packet net, its pretty interesting.
I'm just getting into packet and learning the ways. Im going to
be short time in out checkin, thanks again.

Thank you for holding the net. I'll have to check in again
sometime soon. >>>

KD8MJJ:

I had lost connection with NT0Ys node, but I got the node back
up and running.

It has been a pretty fun week, working with the guys on
getting acclaimated with packet radio. and I am glad to see
they are sticking with it.

I am starting to learn a thing or two off of them. Thanks for
holding the net. I am glad we could assist with breaking the
record. Hopefully we will come back next week for the net.

Haven't been on a packet net in a few years. Been a pleasure.

Replies from N5VLZ (as best as I can recall):

Jay, thanks for being here. The net actually started on the N0KFQ
BBS in Branson in 1980, and the original Sysop, N0KFQ, and his XYL,
KB0WSA, are both Silent Keys. Bob, NS2B, has kept the legacy going.
I don't know of any other packet net.

Glad to have you and the rest of the folks from Michigan here.
We're here most Mondays, except during the weeks of Easter, Memorial
Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New
Years.

Bob (NY), we've gotten a good bit of melting the last few days, but
as noted, it was a mess for awhile. FB on the FLDigi class.

Larry, glad to have you with us...I think you're our first checkin
from North Dakota. We were all beginners at one time...glad you
enjoyed the net.

Rick, those temperatures you've had may be experienced in Arkansas
next week. They are imploring parents to keep their kids off of the
ponds, as the ice won't be strong enough to hold them. FB on the APRS,
VARA, Pactor and Pinpoint, as well as the 3D printer. I've heard of
several hams using them.

Shane, that's a great ham radio call. FB on the packet network there
in Michigan. Glad to have you and the other Michigan hams here.

James, glad you and the others joined us...hope you can be back next
week.

Chris, I was wondering what happened to your connection. Glad you made
it back. See my comments earlier on when the net meets. Hope you can
join us again soon.

I guess we lost Bob, KE3MX...but I think 9 checkins tonight is a PCL
Net record.
