GB2RS NEWS

Sunday 27 January

The news headlines

• HQ gets ready to move

• Antipodean amateurs achieve 2200 miles on 2m

• Belgians get five watts at 500kHz

As part of the preparations for the relocation the RSGB HQ, the Shack,
Library and Museum will close on Friday 1 February 2008. There will be
no public access after this date although the reception book shop will
remain open. GB3RS will be off air for approximately six months.

----------------------------------------

In two spectacular openings on the two metre band, a new Australia to
New Zealand record was set. On 29 December, VK4DMC worked ZL1CN at a
distance of 3549 kilometres. VK4DMC was running 200 watts into an 11
element Yagi just 8 meters above ground. Then on 9 January, there was an
opening to ZL from VK5 resulting in several contacts, the best being
between VK5BC and ZL1TWR over a distance of 3482km.

-----------------------------------------

The Belgian national society UBA has received notice from their
licensing authority BIPT that Belgian amateurs can use the segment
501-504kHz on a secondary basis. Only CW is permitted but this can be at
any speed, so it includes QRSS. The power limit is 5 watts ERP.

The Yasme Foundation in the USA has announced the winners of their first
ever Excellence Awards. These are given for service and dedication to
amateur radio as recognized by the foundation's Directors, and are in
the form of a plaque and a monetary award. The Yasme Foundation is a
not-for-profit corporation organised to conduct scientific and
educational projects related to amateur radio. This includes DXing and
the introduction and promotion of amateur radio in underdeveloped
countries. There were five winners this year.

Joseph L Arcure Junior, W3HNK, got his Excellence Award for his long
service to DXers as a QSL manager.

Sheldon C Shallon, W6EL, gained recognition for his work with
propagation prediction software.

James Brooks, 9V1YC, was honoured for organising DXpeditions and making
professional videos of similar events.

Lastly, Jukka Salomaa, OH2BUA, and Antti Kantola, OH5TB gained their
awards for conceiving, operating, and maintaining DX Summit, the first
widely-used web-based spotting network portal. Detailed citations are
on the Internet at www.yasme.org.

Investigators are trying to find out why a huge tower in Arkansas
collapsed. At 2000 feet high it was once the second highest structure in
the world. No one was seriously injured when the tower fell but crews
working to strengthen the tower had been just minutes away from climbing
it to replace cable. Initial reports suggest that work on high level guy
wires caused the top section to fail, which then damaged other guy wires
on its descent. Built in 1965, the tower held transmitting antennas for
local TV and radio stations.

The RSGB's Train the Trainers scheme continues to help tutors enhance
the standard of their Foundation, Intermediate and Advanced training
courses.
On Saturday 16 Feb an all day Train the Trainers event will place in
Llanrwst, North Wales. Alan Betts, G0HIQ, Dave Wilson, M0OBW, and Brian
Reay, G8OSN, will be presenting the course, which is free of charge to
Instructors. For more information and to register, contact Liz Cabban,
GW0ETU, on 07760190355, or by email to lizcabban@yahoo.co.uk. Demand is
expected to be high, so it is important to register as soon as possible.

Instructors in Regions 10, 12, and 13 are advised that Train the Trainer
sessions are planned in the next four months in Reading, Lincolnshire,
East Sussex and Kent. For further details contact your local Regional
team or Brian Reay, G8OSN, by email to g8osn@rsgb.org.uk.

-------------------------------------------

Now for the news of special events

GB 100 BOS will be active until 27 January, celebrating Birkenhead’s
role as the birthplace of scouting. It was on 24 January 1908 that Lord
Baden Powell publicly inaugurated the Scout Movement as an organisation
following his experimental Scout camp on Brownsea Island. The station
will be active on 15, 17, 20, 80 and 2 metres at various times
throughout the week from locator IO83LJ.

The Blue Mountains Amateur Radio Club in Australia has been granted the
unusual callsign VI 2 B M A R C 50, to commemorate the club's 50th
anniversary. The station is scheduled to be on the air until 28 January.

Also active this month are GB1RAF, a Royal Air Force station, GB2SJA
which celebrates the St John Ambulance charity, and GB5OOT for old
timers. All will operate on 160 metres to 70 centimetres.

GB0WW will be active during February from near Weedon in
Northamptonshire. The site is the location of the memorial to the birth
of radar. This was discovered on 26 February 1935 by Robert Watson Watt
and Arnold Wilkins. GB0RDF will also operate from Borough Hill in
Daventry where radar experiments were carried out.

February also sees the annual Guiding event, Thinking Day on the Air.
This is held on the 16th and 17th, not the 22nd as stated in the latest
RadCom. Many special event and club callsigns will be aired during that
weekend. Further details of Thinking Day on the Air can be found on the
web at: www.guides-on-the-air.co.uk.

------------------------------------------

And now the HF DX news compiled from 425 DX News, the Ohio-Penn DX
Bulletin and other sources.

G1OCN and 2E1DQZ will operate from the Falkland Islands, IOTA SA-002,
until 2 February. Using the calls VP8CLE and VP8DKW, they plan to
operate SSB on 80, 40, 20, 17, 15 and 10 metres, as well as FM on AO-51
and SO-50 satellites.

G7COD will be active for the fourth time as 8Q7AK from Embudu in the
Maldives, IOTA reference AS-013, until 2 February. He plans to operate
mainly SSB with some CW on 40-12 metres. QSL via his home call, direct
or via the bureau.

SM4XDJ will be active as S21XJ from Dhaka, Bangladesh for a few weeks
starting on 1 February. He will operate SSB and digital modes during his
evening hours and the weekends. QSL via SM4XIH.

-------------------------------------------

Now the contest news

The French REF contest ends at 1800 on Sunday, 27 January. CW is used
between 3.5 and 28MHz. Exchange RST and serial number.

The CQ Worldwide 160 metre contest, which started on 26 January, ends at
2359 on the 27th.

The second session of the RSGB 70MHz cumulative contest takes place on
Sunday 27 January from 1000 to 1200 UTC. All modes are permitted and the
exchange is RST, serial number and locator.

Tuesday 29 January sees the RSGB 70MHz Activity contest which starts at
2000UTC and ends at 2230. All modes are permitted and the exchange is
RST, serial number and locator.

On Sunday 3 February there is the RSGB 432MHz Affiliated Societies
Contest. All modes are permitted and the exchange is RST, serial number
and locator.

-------------------------------------------

And now the solar factual data for the period from the 14th to the 20th
of January, compiled by Neil Clarke, G0CAS.

The solar disc was spotless every day and, as a result, solar activity
was very low. Solar flux levels declined slightly from 75 units on the
14th to 70 by the 20th. The average was 73 units. The 90 day solar flux
average on the 20th was 74 units, that’s one unit up on last week. X-ray
flux levels remained below the minimum level throughout the period. The
geomagnetic field started at ‘active’ levels due to a recurring coronal
hole in the Sun’s southern hemisphere. This hole has grown in size since
the last rotation and the disturbance lasted until the 19th. The most
disturbed day was the 14th with an Ap of 16 units. The average was Ap 10
units.

The ACE spacecraft saw solar wind speeds increase to 770 kilometres per
second on the 14th. Speeds remained elevated and it was not until the
20th that speeds declined to 570 kilometres per second. Particle
densities were low throughout. Bz varied between minus 6 and plus 4
nanoTeslas everyday.

Although the increase in geomagnetic activity was relatively small, this
was sufficient to take a slight shine off HF propagation. However, 14MHz
opened to all continents daily and there were openings to West Africa on
24MHz on several days, sometimes lasting several hours, with 28MHz open
to the same area on at least two days. There were a few reports of
auroral contacts on 50 and 144MHz on the 13th and 14th but, as is so
often the case, the UK appears to have missed out.

And finally the solar forecast. This week the slightly more active side
of the Sun is expected to be looking our way. Solar flux levels are
expected to show a small increase and be in the high 70s for most of the
week.

Geomagnetic activity should start at quiet levels, but on Friday
activity is expected to increase due to a recurring coronal hole. MUFs
during daylight hours at equal latitudes should be around 18MHz for the
south
and 15MHz for the north. The darkness hour lows are expected to be about
7MHz. Paths this week to Japan should have a maximum usable frequency
with a 50 per cent success rate of around 17MHz. The optimum
working frequency with a 90 per cent success rate will be about 14MHz.
The best time to try this path will be between 0900 and 1300 hours UTC.

And that’s all for this week from the propagation team.
