WX4QZ:
I hope everyone had a good Labor Day Weekend.
Our next holidays will be for Thanksgiving,
Christmas, and New Years...so we'll be off
those weeks. Now to figure how long it'll be
before I can write 2023 on the checks (hi hi).
I got good reports on the blood work in late
August. The triglycerides were a tad high at
255, but the A1C was steady at 6.0 (same as a
year ago), so no diabetes...and the rest of
the blood work was at normal levels. I'm still
having dry corneas at times, but I still can't
believe I quit all driving 3 months ago. I'm
supposed to get a flu shot in early October,
and maybe a Covid-19 booster in early November.
I'm looking to be off the blood thinner by the
first of the month...and maybe I can set up the
upper and lower GI...but need to find a set of
purgatives that I can tolerate, and that the
insurance will pay for!!
It's going to be interesting to see if the US
railroads shut down early Friday morning...I
saw where some freight railroads have stopped
hazmat and other trains, and Amtrak is going
to do likewise. I'm glad I have no travel
plans outside of central Arkansas anymore.
Add to that the prospect of a US government
shutdown on Oct. 1, and it's a political
nightmare for the Democrats. The mudslinging
is bad enough already. The thing is, like in
sports, the losers riot like spoiled brat kids,
when they don't get their way. I'll have to
take Lyft to the polls, but hope I can work
that out...I'd rather vote in person than do
it absentee...but I plan to early vote.
It was in the 40s and 50s in Arkansas this
morning...a sign of the change of seasons. I
saw a frost advisory for North Dakota. The
wooly worms and the Old Farmers Almanac are
looking at a rough winter...we'll see. At
least no hurricanes threating the US coastline
right now...we just passed the peak of the
season Saturday.
I had to order a new smartphone...the charger
for the current one won't stay connected, the
battery runs down so quick (as they all do),
and it's hard to get a response to display
and keyboard input...it's supposed to arrive
on Friday or Saturday. I hope this phone can
last until then.
My internet crapped out on me last Tuesday just
before I was to do the Arklatex D-Star Net,
so I had to cancel it. I wish the outages
would occur overnight when I'm asleep.
I saw a video on YouTube from 50 years ago with
the late Red Skelton and the late Johnny Carson
on The Tonight Show...it was a hoot!! Red said
"When I wake up, if I don't see candles or
smell flowers, I get up...then, I thumb through
Playboy to get my heart going!!" (hi hi). I sure
miss him...there'll never be another one like
him.

NS2B:
Good evening all!
I guess really it's good afternoon for Rick - I
always forget that!
The holiday for me was good - got some antenna
work done. Built a shorty 40m dipole using Rick's
technique with a pair of Hustler resonators. It
works pretty good! And then I built another
dipole using 1 old Lakeview 20m Hamstick and a
tuned counterpoise. That's working pretty good
too! The 20m needs no tuner - the 40m needs no
tuner if I'm on FT8 - if I move up to the Net40
frequency I have to kick in the tuner for that.
Went to concert Saturday night in Syracuse - saw
Sir Elton John with my youngest son. We never
realized it but that's the first concert I've
gone to with him. Discounting the Disney on Ice
things when he was a kid!
Getting ready to start packing for my trip back
to Missouri - leaving here in the wee hours of
the morning this coming Saturday - pretty sure
I won't make the net next Monday - but I'll try.
Daryl, fb on good med #'s btw!
Rick: congrats on the anniversay - that's a long
time!
Regarding the dipoles - I was wondering if tuning
them asymmetrical (1 longer, 1 shorter) would
broaden their bandwidth a little - something I
want to try.
Charlie: I think we're going to try to hit SDC,
not this Thursday, but next Thursday. Supposed to
be the start of the fall craft season I guess.

VA7RBP:
Good evening Daryl and all on the net. Yes, I
think it's evening... 05:09 pm here.
Yup, we had our 49th on Aug 25, drove to Radium
Hot Springs, stayed overnight at a B&B, had a
great dinner At an Austrian resaurant, and drove
home the next day. Short trip, but we just like
to do something different every year.
The last couple of weeks, like Bob, I've been
doing lots of antenna work. FB on the Hustler
mini-dipoles Bob! I added two new Hustler
mini-dipoles to my antenna farm, an extra 80M
unit for around 3730 and a 6M unit. The 80M
one uses a RM-80S which gives a bit wider
bandwidth, which is actually great because I
can now use it for around 3600 as well. I also
put up a 2M 6 element Yagi for playing around
with some 2M SSB. And yesterday, I put up an
80 ft end fed, managed to string it from the
roof peak at the front of the house. I'll try
it out on our 80M net in another hour and see
how it goes.
I've only been able to work outside for half
the day lately due to the heat, then suddenly
the last couple of days it has really cooled
off. I've been riding the bike most days in
the mornings, except today, the smoke from the
forest fires has gotten pretty bad, air quality
is really poor right now.
Thanks all for the congrats!
Charley: projects...ya, I like to keep busy,
generating ideas, building stuff with next to
nothing and scrounged bits...
Bob: Have a great trip! I didn't try doing the
shorter/longer idea. My array is starting to
get pretty heavy, so I just made the counterpoise
side the same length as the driven side. I'm
getting some interaction between the other
antennas, and proximity to the metal roof, so
I was having to make an adjustment and hoist
the whole thing back up to 22 ft., try it out,
drop it down to make an adjustment, and repeat
until I got reasonable results...and sore shoulders..
While I was doing all this I was dreaming up
making a gin pole with a boat winch to hoist it up
and down.

NT5R:
GE everyone
Bob my concert Friday was Colin Rae, Country
Music weekend at SDC. No comparison to your
concert. Started another Saturday but quickly
rained out.
Rick, fb on your anniversary, a real
accomplishment
Weather cooled Branson last few mornings cooler
than I prefer, low to mid 50s
Rick you always have many projects going. Also
been working on some antenna stuff
Locals have weekday net 7 am 3858 KHz, got dipole
resonant freq raised but then left town. We're in
Tulsa today and area for few days
The hamstick type antennas real handy, have set
of them 80 thru 6 meters
Rick the winch sounds like good idea. My dipole
center on pulley and helps a lot with adjustments
Bob have good trip. Keep me posted if back in town
might help out

Replies from WX4QZ:
My doctors and I were both glad for the good blood
work numbers.
I'm glad for the cooler weather here...in the 50s
in the mornings...one place in north Arkansas was
in the 40s. I'll be glad to have the insects and
the grass to go into winter hibernation.
Bob, FB on the antennas and concert with your son.
I should be able to be here next Monday...just
email me a reminder to give you a courtesy check.
Rick, congratulations on the anniversary, and FB
on the antennas...I hope you can get that winch
set up...bummer on the sore shoulders.
Charley, those hamstick antennas do the job. We
used one on the Arkansas and Missouri Railroad
Memorial Day Troop Train back in 2011, and I had
them when I was living in an apartment. FB on
the antennas.
With Collin Rae, his song "Love Me", is a real
tearjerker...reminding me of my late XYL; it's
coming up on 16 years since I lost her and my
Dad...and just over 3 years now since I lost my
Mom.
