Well, Ian, I guess anyone who lives on his own can be lonely at times. It
should be recognized that it is not only pensioners who can be lonely; it
can be anyone who has no family to turn to, and there are those people
here I guess.

I lost my wife in 1999 to Non-Hodgkins Disease and though it is now 8
years ago I still miss her companionship.. I am fortunate however in that
I have three children living near me and 7 grand children. I have two
other sons with families in other towns about 400 km distant whom I visit
at times. Five grown up children, 10 grandchildren and four greats. For
those without family it must be tough at times. I also have interests as I
said, outside the home, which brings me into frequent contact with other
people. Life can be what you make it, you know.

There is a lot of talk about the "poverty line". Where pensioners have no
home of their own but have to rent, things can be very tough, and those
people can be well below the poverty line. Those who own their own home
can cope quite well. Here are all sorts of perks for seniors here -
discounts on power, water, assistance with rental, pharmaceuticals,
telephone, discounts from many businesses, bulk billed medical for thoe
who choose the doctor who offers this, free diriving licenes, discounted
car licences, and many more. Many perks. The Government in this state used
to provide cheap housing for those who were in financial difficulty,
including pensioners, but the recently defeated Labor Government seems to
have withdrawn from providing such. IN this town some of this cheap
housing was demolished by them and we now have a fine collection of
Government owned vacant 1/4 acre blocks. Maybe the recently elected
Government might resume the programme they had before they were defeated 8
years ago and rebuild some of the State housing suburbs.

Life can be what you make of it, Ian.

Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.

>but i wonder how many lonley pensioners there are in vk?
in the uk there are over one million
no one will solve the problem
because most dont care
if you look at other cultures that is not the case
but why is it the case in the uk and the west
that is the issue
not that you are doing ok down at your local church
73 ian
