ON JANUARY 24, 2022 STORY BY BYMICHAELMORSE

Three firefighters are dead following a collapse of a vacant row house in Baltimore. Three people gone. Three lives that will not be lived.

Experienced, well trained firefighters doing their job, doing it right, doing it without question. Three firefighters dead, and another in critical condition. There is nobody to blame, no second guessing, no if only. Nothing but a tragic loss of life.

The spirit of those who are gone is all we have left. Every firefighter alive today feels the loss. Feels as if part of them is gone. Feels the pain. Accepts it. Puts it in a safe place with the rest, mourns the loss in their own private way and knows, without a doubt that when another job needs to be done they will don the gear, go in, and do it.

Mayor Brandon Scott identified the firefighters killed as Lt. Paul Butrim, Firefighter/Paramedic Kelsey Sadler, and EMT/Firefighter Kenny Lacayo. May they rest in peace, thoughts and prayers for their family, friends and brother and sister firefighters.
