DAREN of WV News October 5, 2008 (.847)
Kenneth Harris WA8LLM (304) 679-3470 wa8llm@yahoo.com
WOOD COUNTY EMERGENCY COMMUNICATIONS, P.O. BOX 3328, PARKERSBURG, WV 26103
http://www.wc8ec.com
DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio
"Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any
information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share
it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail:
wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00
pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net
Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both,
and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main
county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.com website.
Oooops. I forgot a couple things last week. While the NCS (Net Control
Station) for the State Wide DAREN Net was at the Buckwheat Festival last week a
few operators send me messages saying they had trouble getting connected in.
Since they tried to participate in the net they got credit for it. I missed
one on the list. Randy Thomas, K8KHW, has now been added to that list. I also
forgot to thank Larry Slagle, KB8CVP, for being the NCS for last week's net.
If anyone wants to be the NCS for the State Wide DAREN Net at any time, you are
more then welcome to do so. Just let me know when you want to do it, and what
NODEs are the best to use.
I got some E-Mails from Bob Ott, WB8OIF, about the Berkeley County DAREN
NODE/PBBS of BERKWV/MRTNWV. Bob has been in contact with the person who
normally maintains the NODE/PBBS. The NODE/PBBS is located at a TV transmitter
site, and Bob says the person doesn't have much time to monitor and maintain
the station any more. Since the equipment belongs to the county, Bob is going
to talk to the Emergency Coordinator, the county Emergency Management Director,
and also try to get access to the transmitter site so that he can get the
NODE/PBBS back in operation. Bob also said the City Hospital is in the process
of getting another TNC so the NODE/PBBS of BERKHP/MRTNHP can be put operation.
Maybe we will see both stations on the air before long. Bob also told me about
an EmComm reference site that he has put together. He says that it doesn't get
very many hits, but mostly a reference source for the Amateur operators in his
area. He tries to keep the latest DAREN News as well as other items he thinks
are of use to the ARES/RACES operators. The website is:

My daughter Cathy Wotring, KC8DJJ, held a surprise 40th anniversary party for
my Wife Dot, KC8HAI, and me yesterday and one of those who showed up was
Christy Conley, Programs Coordinator, from the Multiple Sclerosis Society. I
talked to Christy about the MS-150 Bike Ride that took place in Greenbrier and
Pocahontas Counies September 6th and 7th. Christy said they managed to get
enough Amateur Radio operators to cover the Road route part of the MS-150, but
didn't have but one person available to cover the Trail route. She said that
Pat Schaffner, KC8CSE, was excited about the Bike Ride and wants to help again
next year. The roblem with that area of the state is the lack of other types
of communications for the safety of the bike riders, and about the only type of
communications that will work well in that area is Amateur Radio. The MS-150
Bike Ride, in West Virginia, is always the weekend after the Labor Day weekend.
If you would like to help with the MS-150 Bike Ride next year, you might mark
your calendar. Maybe you can make a short camping trip out of it. Christy
wants to thank Pat and all of the Amateurs who helped with the communications
and keeping the bike riders safe.
There were 56 check-ins to this week's State Wide DAREN Net. There was one new
station that checked into the net this week and that was Marvin Hill, KD8AVR,
from Beverly, WV. I want to welcome Marvin to the DAREN system and hope that
he will check in as often as possible.
