DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio
"Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any
information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share
it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail:
wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00
pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net
Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both,
and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main
county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.com website.

The News is late getting out this week. I was busy helping with the BINGO
games that were operated at the Volcano Days festival at Mountwood Park. We
operated the BINGO games Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, then we had to tear
everything down, load it on the trailers, and bring it all home. Since I
wasn't home for three days, and had no Internet access, and I had plenty of E-
Mails to get caught up with, but I'm finally getting started on the News.

For those of you who checked into the State Wide DAREN Net on Saturday, don't
forget to send a SASE and a QSL Card to: Bill Beardslee, NN8W, 109 Western Dr.
PO Box B5, Kingwood, WV, 26537, if you want to get a certificate from the
Special Event Station W8B (We 8 Buckwheat), held at the annual Preston County
Buckwheat Festival, over this past weekend.

Shane Harper, KD8BMX, sent me a couple of E-Mails telling me about a couple of
the DAREN Packet stations that he has been working on. A new DAREN NODE/PBBS
station has been installed at the Randolph County Office of Emergency Services.
Frank Hughs, WD8DEP, and Howard Peek, N8SCS, were the ones who installed the
station, and Shane programed the ALIASes for the NODE and PBBS. Shane was also
having trouble connecting to the Davis Memorial Hospital NODE/PBBBS of
RANDDM/ELKNDM for the past week or so. He met with Terry Wyatt at the hospital
and they corrected the problem, some how it bumped off frequency.

This coming weekend, October 4th and 5th, is the main ARRL SET (Simulated
Emergency Test). There is no scenario for the SET this year, so each county
ARES group can operate a drill that best fits their group. If a county ARES
group doesn't have a drill in mind, they should contact another county ARES
group and participate with them. Even though the main SET is this weekend, an
SET can be operated any time during the Fall, which is between September 22nd
and December 19th. The SET report needs to be sent to the ARRL by January 30,
2009.

Larry Slagle, KB8CVP, who was the Net Control Sttion for the State Wide DAREN
Net this weekend, reported there were 45 check-ins. The net participation may
have been down due to stations either not knowing where the NCS was located, or
they were unable to get connected. By moving the NCS around the state, it
makes it a challenge to get checked in, but it gives us practice using Packet
and learning our way around the state. There were a couple of operators who
have been gone from the net for awhile. Terry Brown, KC8AOF, who's been
missing from the net since September 25, 2004 and, Duane Jones, N8LDM, who's
been missing from the net since February 11, 2006, got to check into the net
from the Packet station that we were using at the Volcano Days festival. I
would like to see Terry and Duane start checking in more often. There was one
new check-in to the net this week and that was Kara Cress, KD8AEF, from
Kingwood. I hope that Kara can check in more often.
