DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio
"Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any
information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share
it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail:
wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00
pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net
Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both,
and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main
county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.com website.

I talked to Larry Slagle, KB8CVP, on the telephone this week and he wanted to
let me know the information for the Buckwheat Festival SES (Special Event
Station) didn't get put into the ARRL QST magazine this year. The SES will be
operated during the Buckwheat Festival which always starts the last Thursday in
September and ends the following Sunday. The festival this year will run from
September 25th through September 28th. If the SES operates the same as the
past years, here's the information that I have. The times will be from 1400Z
to 0200Z. The SES will be operating Phone and CW on 40, 20, 10 meters, about
25 KHz up from the bottom of the General Phone and Novice CW bands. They will
also be operating PSK on 20 and 10 meters. Request for a SES Certificate can
be mailed to Bill Beardslee, NN8W, 109 Western Dr. PO Box B5, Kingwood, WV,
26537. The State Wide DAREN Net NCS will also be located at the festival.
Those station who usually try to check into the DAREN Net early may have to
wait until the packet station gets set up on Saturday. The NCS operator may
have to shut down the station by 10:00 pm on Saturday evening, since everyone
needs to leave the fair ground area about that time. I'll be sure to print
some of this information again next week and get some of it on the next two
weekly Net Announcements.

I got an E-Mail from Shane Harper, KD8BMX, about the Forest Festival. I'm not
for sure of the dates of the festival, but the Forest Festival Grand Parade
will be held on October 4th. Amateur Radio operators will be providing the
communications for the parade and Shane is looking for volunteers. Anyone
wanting to help Shane should get a hold of him for additional information.
Shane says they are going to try and use the DAREN Chatroom to relay the
changes in the parade line up to the announcer's booth, and to monitor the
Office of Emergency Services. Shane would like to get three mobile or portable
packets stations for the event, but he said he could get by with just two. Now
would be the time to practice using the Chatroom in case you may want to use it
in a real emergency.

I want to thank all of the Amateur Radio operators who participated in the
Multiple Sclerosis Society MS-150 this weekend. I got several E-Mails and
telephone calls of those wanting to help, and looking for information. I was
hoping to help myself, and I was planning on going down, but at the last minute
one of the local Fire Departments needed one of our large canopies for their
Pig Roast on Saturday. They use the canopy for shade and/or protection from
the rain and to cover the four cookers they use cooking.

There were 58 check-ins to this week's State Wide DAREN Net. Jerry Arnold,
NQ8B, needs only one more check-in to make 700. Tom White, W3JTW, needs only
one more check to make 400. And Frank Hughe, WD8DEP, needs only one more
check-in to make 150.
