DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio
"Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any
information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share
it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail:
wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00
pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net
Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both,
and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main
county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.com website.

The News is late getting out this week due to the activities that I was
involved with over this past weekend.

In the last couple of months I've noticed that we have lost a few of the
regular DAREN NODE/PBBS stations. The latest one that I can no longer connect
to is the Hancock County NODE/PBBS of HANCWV/WEIRWV. I'm hoping that one of
these days, one of the grants that we apply for will be approved. Every time
that we find a place to apply for a grant, Terry Mills, KC8TUE, and Denise
Mills, KC8TUF, fill out the grant paperwork and send it in. One of the
projects that we are hoping to get a grant application approved for, is to
purchase the equipment to install new DAREN stations, or replace old ones. All
that we can hope for is we don't lose very many more stations. With the loss
of stations, and tower locations, the DAREN system will start to fall apart.

Bob Tuckerman, W3RUA, sent me an interesting message last week describing the
solution to a problem he was having. I had talked to Bob on the phone, and he
said that he was having a problem with the number 3 on his packet station. Any
time that he would try to connect to something, or read a message with a 3 in
it, it wouldn't work. Bob said that he found the problem. Some how the
Command Redisplay got changed from $12 (CTRL-R) to $33 (3). He did a hard rest
on the TNC and everything works fine now. It's not hard to change the
parameters in a TNC if you're not careful. If you start having problems that
you don't understand, and can't seem to find a solution, the best thing to do
is just give your TNC a HARD RESET, that will take it back to the day you took
it out of the box. Most of the time that will take care any problems.

I got a telephone call today from Larry Slagle, KB8CVP, about the Preston
County NODE/PBBS of PRESWV/KINGWV. Larry said the tower site got hit by
lightening and damaged the power supply for the 147.000 repeater. He didn't
think to check the DAREN station while he was at the tower site. But, when he
found out the station was down, he went back to the site and picked up the
station. He says the DAREN station seems to be working okay after he gave the
TNC a hard reset. The station is located at his house for now, but he's hoping
to get it back on the hill as soon as possible. Larry also gave me some sad
news about a long time DAREN user, and past Preston County Office of Emergency
Services' Director. Richard Wolfe, KA8UEU, pasted away on June 14th. I knew
that Rich has been in poor health, but didn't know that he had passed away.
I've known Rich for over 20 years and I will miss him.

There were 57 check-ins to this week's State Wide DAREN Net. Buford Lemon Jr.,
KB8QLG, who's been participating in the net since July 8, 1995, has completed
450 check-ins. Jim Perry, KB8LSR, who's been participating in the net since
April 15, 1995, has completed 100 check-ins. Both of these operators will be
receiving their certificates.

I hope to see everyone at Jackson's Mill this coming Saturday.
