Well, Peter, settle yourself and I'll tell you about it!
It was over 100 years ago when the Australians started sending cricket
teams to England to play cricket against an English team.
Finally in one of these games the Australians won and England was plunged
into mourning! Some wag burnt a piece of wood (a bail?) and put it in an
urn and published a death notice in the Times newspaper mourning the
death of English cricket. The notice said after the cremation of the body
the ashes would be sent to Australia.
The centenary of that "Test" was celebrated in a return match about 25 (?)
years ago in Melbourne. Strangely the result of that first Test was a win
by Australia by 45 runs, and the result of the Centenary Test, by some
freak of coincidence was exactly the same - a win by Australia by 45 runs.
One Dennis Lilley featured in the Centenary game.
I have no idea what the score is of wins for England versus wins for
Australia but I guess it is fairly even. Certainly both countries look
forward to the next Test, and large crowds attend the five day matches.
The Ashes reemain in the pavilion at Lords Cricket Ground in London no
matter who wins the Test Series.

BTW Peter, Canada does play cricket. They send a team to the World Series
which is held at intervals; so do Holland, Ireland, and many other
countries. The USA used to but inter4est in the game in the USA seems to
have dimished. I suspect most of their team consisted of ex patriate West
Indians where the game is extremely popular.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.
