I find myself having to agree with david,G4EBT on this one.

I followed a similar path. I too started with a baycom modem and
associated software then PaKet 5 in late 1990. This came to a halt in 1992
when wifw and PC which was hers, exited.

1993 and I started again with a BSX TNC and a HP pc, The problem with that
was it was't an IBM clone and the newly arrive 7Plus used to do a lot of
damage to it. I scraped up the money for a PC with an MS OS and first,
tried installin FBB as a user progeramme with the help of my then syaop
who would come 10 miles to try to help me install it. Sadly, he had
forgotten one file.

Then someone mentioned TPK (The PacKet programme) which ran in DOS quite
easily unser W 3.11 and later versions, right up to ME when I moved to an
area in which aerials were banned.

I loved TPK with it's high speed and varioua add ons. I did swap a few
messages with Roger Barker by SP. He was also using TPK back then and, to
anyone who has used it, it is pretty obvious where a lot of Winpack came
from. I did try some other like NPFPMS but always went back to TPK.

Five years ago, under an areal ban, I was forced to use Winpack purely
because of the Telnet. Then came the sysops who helped me first with
another Telnet BBS then GB7FCR with all his help.

I have recently renovated a couple of rigs and found that there is life!
In fact we now have four other regfulars apart from me. Two have broadband
and don't really want to mess with TNCs even using the sound card so I
have given them Trevor M1CUK's URL, mentoning that they can download
Winpack from it. We now have a good chance that we will get two more
contributors.

One of the four on 70cm has been on packet for a long time but only reads
bulls. One is new, he is 20 and the other is his father who didn't know
about Telnet and is now keen to try it.

I know Trevor is forced to pack it in in November but I am sure we will
find others even if it has to be 'down under',Hi!

Perhaps there is hope for AR yet. We'll see.
