World News this Week

Amateur Radio Television Channel
Last weekend I was at the AMSAT-UK Meeting in Guildford England via the BATC.TV Amateur Radio Television Channel.

It was fantastic to be able to watch all the AMSAT lectures in the comfort of my home and there was even the ability to interact during the question sessions after each lecture.

The picture quality was the best I have ever seen on any Camstream or Ustream and better than most of the pictures I see in my local ATN repeaters. And you are able to view the picture full screen on your computer. And there doesn't seem to be the problem we have always had on Camstream when we have to many viewers and the picture slows down and the audio drops out and people lose picture and audio all together.

The BATC.TV is available to anyone or any group, organization, club or event in any country with programming related to Amateur Radio. During the AMSAT-UK meeting U.S. AMSAT members watching stated that it would be great if AMSAT-NA would do the same when it's Symposium is held later this year. Some of you might not know, the BATC wanted to broadcast the ATV Lectures from Dayton this year but there was technical problems on our end that prevented it happening this year.

The San Bernardino Microwave Society has been contacted about airing it's meeting each month and we all might be surprised and see it this coming Thursday. Or maybe next month.

I talked with Trevor Brown of the BATC and Ian,G3ZHI and it was mentioned that a "HF-UK Meeting" was coming up the later part of the year that they intend to air.

I hope that the ARRL picks up news about the BATC.TV and takes up the cause. I would love to see "QST" print an article about BATC.TV and make it's existence known to every Ham in the U.S.. W1AW could prerecord announcements or send live broadcasts of meeting and national conventions so every ham that wanted could attend.

I heard one of the Regional ARRL Directors talking about getting more people involved in Amateur Radio at one of the San Bernardino Microwave Society Meetings and if someone had an answer to let him know. Well this is it. Everyone gets all their information from the Internet and Video is the vehicle to attract interest. And it's time Amateur Radio took it's place on the Internet.

Think of all the possibilities: What if Gordon West WB6NOA produced a 15 or 30 min. video called introduction to Amateur Radio and add it on the BATC.TV archive. Then interested people could be directed to the website and they could watch it when ever they want. Gordo could even plug his educational material or his publisher could also be a advertising sponsor of BATC.TV.

Manufactures of Amateur Radio Equipment should consider producing advertisements for the BATC.TV in the form of a product release and demonstrations. You could direct viewers in your print ads to BATC.TV. You now have an avenue to reach a target audience with video commercials for the first time. And the manufactures should all consider becoming a sponsor of BATV.TV. Send an email to info@batv.tv to become a sponsor.

Additional programs could be produced to developed interest in ATV, microwave, satellite and digital Amateur Radio applications. The Internet and Video is the answer to expanding and acquiring new Ham Radio Operators to the hobby.

I asked Trevor Brown if the AMSAT-UK meeting would be archived so if someone missed the weekend and wanted to watch it at a later date. Trevor told me that the programs are not automatically added to the archive but they are recorded on DVD during the live event and would be added to the archive at a later date.

The weekend before the AMSAT event the BATC.TV broadcast the "Microwave Weekend" Meeting in the UK.

I will be publishing any planned broadcasts of the BATC.TV's upcoming events so you can tune in and experience the newest technology and the most important resource that Amateur Radio has ever had to improve the hobby. And please tell your Ham friends that aren't into ATV about BATC.TV so we can spread the word.
