BONNE ROUTE!
============
If, like me, you enjoy a good drive, here is my route to and from
ALGECIRAS. (Near Gibraltar). But first make sure your car is up to the
trip at m/way speeds, water oil etc. I will assume that you use the
Channel Tunnel (Cheapest between 2200 and 0600). Upon leaving the terminus
at Coquelles follow directions for ROUEN then ELBEUF/EVREUX/CHARTRES/ORLEAN
S and Jct 12 A10. Unless you are really dawdling you can be at the first
service area for a well earned break in FOUR HOURS. On this route you will
cross the beautiful Viaduc de Millau. Follow signs for BARCELONE. I try to
break for 90 minutes every FOUR HOURS. Once ur on the A9 its a doddle:) As
you enter SPAIN be wary of the reduction in speed to 120Kph, if you dont
the Policia will. They are an excellent bunch always willing to help out.
You will now be on the A7 to MURCIA and you will be moving in a sw
direction to GRANADA/MALAGA/TORREMOLINOS et ALGECIRAS. Distances are very
deceptive driving in France and Spain as the roads are so excellent all
courtesy of the British Tax payer. So, pace urself carefully. If you need
sleep, dont hesitate, pull off and sleep as long as you wish.
The A10 reached in the way described is now the cheapest toll route south
and if you want to make for SANTANDER in Spain just follow for BORDEAUX et
BILBAO remaining on the A10 or take the A20 to TOULOUSE et ANDORRA. If you
drive well and rest every four hours one can reach most border
destinations in the Pyrennes within 14 driving hours. M/way speeds in
FRANCE are 81MPH when dry or 70MPH when wet or as instructed. Like Britain
Speed cameras have trebled, but under French law they are well published
in advance so BE AWARE!
VANNES/LORIENT are more popular destinations and they are reached via LE
HAVRE/PONT DE NORMANDIE/CAEN/RENNES the A84 is known by ex pats as the
ENGLISH M/WAY as there are no tolls - at present. Its a very good surfaced
road as are many *D* roads all paid for by the British purse.
France/Italy/Germany/Holland are all practiced in the art of saying
NO/NEIN to Brussels directives.
In addition to a TRIANGLE ensure you are carrying TWO FLOURESCENT VESTS or
you will suffer an on the spot fine of E130. If i can help with any
particular route in the whole of the EU please P mail me.
Best wishes,
Rodge.
