Well! Where to begin? Looks familar to me with my former BBS
run by a "CLUB" that professed to be a Radio Club dropping the
BBS for the same reasons Trevor. I was actually their last
and only user...and I wanted them to join the "growing"
network I access via VA3BAL.

No go ... sysop even changed the signon message to a straight
going off air...and that was it....now unfortunately gone
but for reasons unknown...perhaps even into club rival stuff
who knows...but even one gone is bad.

As for myself being a landline BBS sysop..... and doing it
independent from any club or user fees or whatever...I can
see where you are coming from when you mention the expense
of setting up and running a 24/7 BBS on-air or via the
telephone. I took my BBS offline in 2005 as the Internet
arrived in our area.... 30 BBS disappeared in 1999 and
it was only due to family circumstances etc....BUT now
Trev...via my friends...and I mean friends...the BBS I
had is back... On a donated IBM Computer...donated
programs....and now looking to re-establish the old
phoneline < doubt I will get it> and looking forward
to making it Telnet accessable ... BUT for now the guys
have it operating "static" sending and receiving QWKmail
and apparently we have more then 5 whole users doing
this method until dialup and Telnet come...SO ????

I can understand the network as described in UK...but
you have some really great sysops over there to work
with and clubs to get together with to breath some
life into a hobby which is supposed to be "RADIO"
primary number uno ....

Via HF ... on 80meter nets...I always mention packet
and via this method....got a few clubs and individuals
to go to clubs as well themselves back on Packet.

Trevor ... world-wide..somewhere there are even users
that have had their RF packet BBSes shutdown for whatever
reason... and they are looking for a BBS to telnet to
to get back on the air.... VIa this method...I note
past participants of the YL@WW net have connects to
just read along and have good times....as I get emails
from them...especially when bringing to light old postings
they have sent to things like our YL Cookbook...so
while off..they do read.

I hope you never sell your setup. I only hope that some
where in UK...within your RF range there is a club<s>
that realize their hobby is RADIO ..RF and they give you
a hand to keep the system in your area up and running
and that system connected to the Network.

You can miss a call on all other modes....except packet.
You're station's TNC mailbox...the local BBS...all
collect postings, private mailings and send out beacons
all the time ...where else on Ham RADIO can one get that?
NO WHERE!

Example I noticed was Grevais VE2CKN telling about the
T-storm that fried VE2RXY in Quebec .... BUT he is
coming back! Theres some encouragement!

This morning I got a message from the sysop of VA3BAL BBS
Trevor who hear me on-air...and gave me an update of all
the work he and mostlikely others are doing...behind the
scenes to update...and bring online via RF more stations
etc ... so there is growth.

I still get messages even from sysops outside my area
with their news... and it only get better.

Time to re-light the fire under the Hams in UK trevor.

I wish you well...
