DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio
"Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz. Anyone having any
information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share
it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail:
wa8llm@yahoo.com. A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00
pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours. The DAREN Net
Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both,
and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main
county DAREN PBBS'. The DAREN News can also be found on the wc8ec.com website.

On Tuesday the 17th, a communications exercise for the Coalition Warrior
Interoperability Demonstration (CWID) was held using several different systems.
There wasn't a big turn out on any one system, but I also heard that during the
monthly ARES/RACES net, on the 5th, that ARES wasn't going to participate in
the CWID. Here's a short rundown on each of the systems that I was involved
with in the communications activity which ran from 9:0 am until 6:00 pm. On
the Charleston area VHF Voice repeater, 146.64 MHz, eight out of the nine
county Health Department offices in the Southern part of the state checked into
their Health Department Net and were able to communicate with each other. On
the HF frequency of 3811 KHz, fifteen operators participated, which represented
eleven counties. The DAREN Chatroom was also in operation, and 10 stations
checked in, and either stayed there all day, and communicated, or just checked
in and then left. Even though the Welcome Message ask for a county name and
location, some of the operators didn't give the information, so I'm not for
sure how many counties were represented. For the most part I felt the drill
was a success since the original plans didn't make any mention of Amateur
Radio, but since the "I" in CWID stood for Interoperability, I felt that
Amateur Radio should have been part of the exercise. Dave Bradley, N8DWB, who
operated the Packet station at the Jackson County Emergency Operations Center,
fell in love with Packet Radio during the exercise and wants to get a TNC and
get more involved. Maybe before long we will see him starting to check into
the State Wide DAREN Net.

Don't forget that Field Day will be this coming weekend. As usual the State
Wide DAREN Net will be in operation over the complete Field Day period, so you
should have plenty of time to get checked into the net. If you want to make
Field Day contacts using the DAREN system, you can BEACON through the system by
using the UNPROTO command of "NET VIA DAREN,DAREN,DAREN". You should set your
BEACON to operate no less than every 5 or 10 minutes, so that it doesn't tie up
the frequency. In your "BTEXT", be sure to give the name of the NODE or NODEs
that can reach yoion. If some one wants to make contact with you they
will need to know how to get to you. The Wood County Emergency Communications
group will be operating a Packet station using the Callsign of WC8EC. Also you
can receive an extra 100 points for sending a message to the ARES SEC (Section
Emergency Coordinator) and/or the ARES SM (Section Manager) during the
operation of Field Day. If the Winlink 2000 Telpac NODEs of K8KHW-7 and K8KHW-
10 are in operation, you can send the SEC and/or SM an E-Mail via Packet Radio
and get your extra points.

There was61 check-ins to this week's State Wide DAREN Net. Bill Wagner,
N8RSM, who's been participating in the net since May 23, 1994, has completed
400 check-ins. Ryan Thomas, KD8EMM, who's been participating in the net since
November 18, 2006, has completed 50 check-ins. Both of these operators will be
receiving their certificates. There was one new operator that checked into the
net this week, and that was Danny Bryson, KD8HCI, from Huntington. I want to
welcome Danny to the DAREN system, and hope that he can participate as often as
possible.
