Hi Sergej and others,

Very good idea Sergej, there have been several attempts but none that I
would call both successful and user friendly (e.g. openbcm and its
bulletin handling problems). I would only ask that it copes with HTML,
binary files, and standard modern message formats. The ability to pass
larger files and format messages more along the lines of the internet
would attract a lot more users to packet I would suspect.

Perhaps what we really need is something that copies the better parts of
the internet for email service etc but I can't get my mind around a
1200bps DNS type server located somewhere on the packet network. The
ability to set up web type pages running under an APACHE type of server
would be great, even FTP transfers would be nice. It's just that 1200bps
filter that is the problem. Maybe some real smart amateur can come up
with a new rugged compression scheme that will let us fit 1.2Mbits/s into
a 1200 bits/s circuit...

A similar system to what you suggest for my problem is being used by
Michael ZL1AB. There is a bulletin to sysop floating around from him
explaining how he has set it up.

It was my wish to be able to just allocate a TCP/IP address to the
Ethernet to serial port converter and using FBB just send the packets to
and receive the packets from, the allocated fixed IP address like it does
for a normal serial port.

I had forgotten about the need to hide the port from windows, but I have
several legacy Ethernet cards so an extra one in the PC for FBB's
exclusive use is not a problem.

                     Regards Tony
